MELBOURNE– Qatar Airways (QR) will intensify competition on the busy trans-Tasman market after announcing a new daily service between Melbourne Airport (MEL) and Auckland Airport (AKL) beginning December 9, 2026.
The new operation places the Gulf carrier alongside Qantas (QF), Air New Zealand (NZ), and Jetstar (JQ) on one of Australasia’s busiest international routes.
The service forms part of the airline’s Doha (DOH)-Melbourne-Auckland schedule and will be operated by a Boeing 777-300ER.
The revised routing replaces the existing Doha-Adelaide (ADL)-Auckland operation, offering travelers an additional daily option while expanding Qatar Airways’ presence across Australia and New Zealand.
Qatar Airways New Route
Qatar Airways will operate flight QR904 from Melbourne at 1:20 a.m., arriving in Auckland at 6:50 a.m. the same day.
The return service, QR905, will depart Auckland at 1:15 p.m. before landing in Melbourne at 3:10 p.m., allowing the aircraft to continue onward to Doha later that afternoon.
The additional flights strengthen competition on the Auckland-Melbourne corridor, where Qantas, Air New Zealand, and Jetstar already offer multiple daily services.
While these airlines dominate the market through frequency, Qatar Airways will differentiate itself by deploying a long-haul Boeing 777-300ER equipped with its premium international cabin products.
The move also reflects the airline’s broader strategy to maximize aircraft utilization during scheduled ground time in Australia.
Instead of remaining idle between long-haul sectors, the aircraft will operate a short trans-Tasman flight before returning to Doha.
Schedule Changes and Route Adjustments
The new routing replaces Qatar Airways’ current Adelaide-Auckland extension beginning December 9, 2026.
During the period through January 31, 2027, flights from Doha to Adelaide will terminate in Adelaide instead of continuing to New Zealand. Schedules beyond February 1, 2027, have not yet been finalized by the airline.
The carrier also has not confirmed when its nonstop Doha-Auckland service will resume after it was previously suspended because of regional security disruptions linked to the conflict involving Iran.
At the same time, Qatar Airways is expanding its Australian network by restoring twice-daily Melbourne services and increasing Canberra flights, demonstrating continued confidence in demand across Oceania.
Passenger Benefits and Travel Experience
The Melbourne-Auckland route will also provide travelers with a more affordable opportunity to experience Qatar Airways’ award-winning Qsuite Business Class.
The cabin includes sliding privacy doors, lie-flat beds, and an onboard dining experience featuring an à la carte menu created in partnership with New Zealand chef Michael Meredith.
Published fares indicate economy tickets start from around NZ$600, while business class begins at approximately NZ$1,480 for the trans-Tasman sector, The Stuff reported.
By comparison, business class fares between Auckland and Doha typically exceed NZ$8,300, making the shorter route an attractive option for passengers wanting to experience the airline’s premium product.
Qatar Airways joins a growing list of international carriers using fifth-freedom services between Australia and New Zealand, similar to Emirates’ Sydney-Christchurch flights and Starlux Airlines’ planned Taipei-Sydney-Auckland operation.
The latest addition is expected to provide travelers with more choice while increasing competitive pressure on established trans-Tasman operators.
