LONDON– AirAsia X (D7) has confirmed a delay to its planned Middle East and Europe expansion after postponing its Bahrain-linked service launch due to ongoing regional instability.
The low-cost carrier operates from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) and had aimed to strengthen its long-haul network through new connectivity in the Gulf.
The airline originally planned to launch a new route connecting Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) with Bahrain International Airport (BAH), extending onward to London Gatwick Airport (LGW).
However, AirAsia X has now pushed the launch timeline to at least August or September, depending on operational and market conditions.

AirAsia X Delays London Flights
AirAsia X announced that it has officially postponed the commencement of its Kuala Lumpur–Bahrain–London Gatwick service. The airline had initially targeted a June start but revised its schedule due to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The revised timeline reflects a cautious approach as the carrier reassesses operational readiness. AirAsia X stated that the situation requires flexibility in long-haul planning, particularly for routes involving multiple international airspaces.
Despite the delay, the airline has not withdrawn the route permanently. Instead, it continues to monitor conditions closely before confirming a firm launch date, Reuters reported.

Operational Constraints Overview
The airline highlighted regional conflict as a key factor influencing its decision. Airspace uncertainty and fluctuating operating conditions have increased risk for long-haul network planning, especially across Middle Eastern corridors and connecting routes.
AirAsia X has also been managing broader financial pressures, including volatile jet fuel prices that have affected its cost structure.
Earlier financial results showed pressure on profitability, prompting capacity adjustments across parts of its network and a more cautious fleet utilization strategy.
Management emphasized a “measured approach” to expansion, prioritizing operational stability over rapid route launches. The carrier remains focused on balancing growth ambitions with financial discipline while reassessing timing for future international route developments.

Passenger Adjustments Support Assistance
AirAsia X confirmed that affected passengers will receive full refunds or alternative travel options. The airline stated that customer service teams are actively managing bookings linked to the postponed route.
The Kuala Lumpur–Bahrain–London Gatwick connection was expected to serve both leisure and business demand across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
Its delay temporarily limits connectivity options for long-haul travelers using the airline’s network.
Despite the setback, AirAsia X reiterated its commitment to establishing Bahrain as a strategic hub in the future. The airline maintained that it still sees strong long-term potential in the route once conditions stabilize.
