GUANGZHOU— China Southern Airlines (CZ) has announced a major wide-scale narrowbody aircraft order with Airbus, committing to 137 A320neo family jets in a deal valued at approximately US$21.37 billion at list prices.
The agreement reinforces Airbus’ dominance in the Chinese market as speculation continues around a potential Boeing order.
The Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN)-based carrier confirmed that it will acquire 102 aircraft directly, while its subsidiary Xiamen Airlines (MF) will purchase the remaining 35 jets.
Deliveries are scheduled between 2028 and 2032, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals.

China Southern Airlines Orders 137 Airbus Jets
The latest order highlights Airbus’ growing advantage in China, one of the world’s most competitive and strategically important aviation markets. Chinese state-owned carriers have consistently favored Airbus in recent years, strengthening the European manufacturer’s foothold.
China Southern stated that the pricing included customary industry discounts, describing them as consistent with previous transactions. Large aircraft deals often involve significant reductions from list prices, especially for bulk orders of this scale.
The airline’s board emphasized that the acquisition aligns with long-term national development strategies. These include initiatives such as the Greater Bay Area and the Belt and Road Initiative, both of which aim to expand connectivity and economic integration.

Fleet Expansion Strategy
China Southern plans to deploy the new A320neo aircraft to modernize its fleet and improve operational efficiency.
The fuel-efficient narrowbody jets are expected to support both domestic growth and regional international routes.
Xiamen Airlines, historically known for operating an all-Boeing fleet, has already begun diversifying its aircraft portfolio. The subsidiary introduced its first Airbus jet in 2023, marking a significant shift in its fleet strategy, SCMP flagged.
The addition of these aircraft will enhance network flexibility and reduce operating costs.
Airlines across China are increasingly prioritizing newer-generation aircraft to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market.

China’s Boeing Deal Uncertain
While Airbus continues to secure large orders, Boeing’s anticipated deal with China remains unresolved. Industry sources have indicated that discussions between the United States and China have included the possibility of a significant Boeing aircraft purchase.
Reports have suggested that a future agreement could involve hundreds of aircraft, though no official confirmation has been made.
The situation has drawn attention from US policymakers, particularly given Boeing’s strategic importance to the American aerospace sector.
Recent geopolitical developments have added complexity to the negotiations. Delays in high-level diplomatic engagements have further slowed progress on any potential agreement.
Despite this uncertainty, Airbus has continued to capitalize on the gap by securing new commitments from Chinese airlines.
