TORONTO— A key figure in the 2023 Pearson Airport gold heist has pleaded guilty in a case that shocked the global aviation and logistics industry. The theft occurred at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and involved cargo transported via Air Canada (AC), making it one of the most significant security breaches in Canadian aviation history.
The accused, Arsalan Chaudhary, admitted to his role in orchestrating the theft of gold and cash valued at over $22 million. The cargo had arrived on an international flight from Zurich Airport (ZRH) and was stored temporarily at an Air Canada cargo facility before being stolen within hours of landing.

Toronto Pearson Heist Mastermind Pleads Guilty
Authorities described the operation as highly organized yet alarmingly simple in execution. A truck driver used fraudulent documentation to collect a secure container holding approximately 400 kilograms of gold, along with foreign currency.
A warehouse employee unknowingly assisted in loading the shipment, after which the truck exited the premises without raising suspicion. The stolen gold represented thousands of bars and was intended for delivery to clients via a secure logistics provider.
Investigators later confirmed that most of the gold was melted down and sold through illegal channels. Due to its illicit status, the gold was reportedly sold at a significantly reduced value.

Investigation Progress
Law enforcement agencies identified ten individuals linked to the crime, highlighting the scale of coordination involved. Chaudhary fled Canada after the heist and remained a fugitive until he returned voluntarily in early 2026.
Upon arrival at Pearson Airport, he surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody. His guilty plea marks a major development in the case, leaving only two suspects still at large.
Officials revealed that financial records recovered during the investigation showed how proceeds from the gold were distributed among participants. These records provided critical insight into the structure of the criminal network.

Legal Proceedings
Chaudhary pleaded guilty to theft over $5,000 and awaits sentencing. Prosecutors are seeking a seven-year prison term, while the defense has argued for a reduced sentence of four years, the National Post reported.
Additional charges, including possession of stolen property and conspiracy, are expected to be addressed during sentencing proceedings. Legal experts note that the outcome could set a precedent for organized cargo theft cases in Canada.
Meanwhile, authorities continue efforts to locate the remaining suspects. Some individuals connected to the case also face charges in the United States related to firearms trafficking, indicating broader criminal links.
Despite extensive recovery efforts, only a small portion of the stolen assets has been retrieved. Police have recovered limited amounts of gold reshaped into jewelry and a fraction of the cash believed to be proceeds from the sale.
