CHICAGO- United Airlines (UA) has taken delivery of its first Boeing 787-9 featuring the new long-haul “United Elevated” interior, marking a major shift toward premium-heavy international flying.
The aircraft will debut in March 2026, then operate long-haul routes from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Singapore Changi Airport (SIN).
Delivered from Boeing’s Charleston facility and routed via Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), the 222-seat Dreamliner introduces Polaris Studio suites, upgraded Polaris cabins, and Starlink connectivity as part of a broader fleet transformation.

United 787-9 New Polaris Studio
The new Boeing 787-9 is configured with 222 seats, significantly rebalanced toward premium cabins. The layout includes:
- 64 Polaris business class seats, including 8 Polaris Studio suites
- 35 Premium Plus seats
- 33 Economy Plus seats
- 90 Economy seats
This configuration increases business class capacity by 16 seats and Premium Plus by 14 seats compared to United’s current 787-9 layout, while reducing total economy seating. The aircraft now offers 99 premium seats, the highest percentage among U.S. carriers.
United confirmed that all future 787 deliveries will feature the Elevated interior. The airline expects about 30 of these aircraft by 2027. There are no announced retrofit plans for existing Dreamliners, View from the Wing reported.

Polaris Studio: A New Tier of Business Class
Polaris Studio represents a new business-plus product positioned in the first row of each Polaris cabin section. The aircraft includes eight Studio suites in a 1-2-1 configuration.
Each Polaris Studio seat is 25 percent larger than standard Polaris and features:
- A privacy door
- An ottoman with a seatbelt for companions in select suites
- A 27-inch 4K OLED touchscreen, the largest among U.S. carriers
- Bluetooth connectivity
- Wireless charging, USB-C ports, and AC power
- Digital seat controls
- Saks Fifth Avenue bedding and exclusive amenities

Passengers booking Polaris Studio receive additional benefits, including access to United’s Global Reception area, preferred boarding, and eligibility for luxury tarmac transfers at select airports.
Standard Polaris seats have also been upgraded with sliding doors, 19-inch 4K OLED screens, Bluetooth, wireless charging, and redesigned finishes.
The cabin offers both center-facing suites for added privacy and aisle-facing paired suites suited for travelers flying together.

Premium Plus and Economy Cabin Enhancements
Premium Plus now features 35 seats in a 2-3-2 layout, the largest Premium Plus cabin in United’s fleet. Enhancements include:
- 16-inch 4K OLED screens
- Bluetooth connectivity
- Wireless charging and multiple power options
- Privacy dividers with integrated reading lights
- Quartzite cocktail tables and soft-touch finishes
Economy Plus and Economy are arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration across 15 rows. Key features include:
- 13-inch 4K OLED seatback screens, the largest in economy globally
- Bluetooth connectivity at every seat
- Six power outlets per row
- A redesigned seat bottom that reclines with added support

Connectivity and Inflight Experience
The Elevated 787-9 comes factory-equipped with Starlink satellite internet. MileagePlus members will receive free access, including coverage over oceans and polar regions where traditional systems struggle.
United also plans an enhanced onboard dining service, including Ossetra caviar amuse-bouche offerings in Polaris Studio and curated wine pairings.
Flight attendants will complete ground service trials before entry into revenue service to align procedures with the new cabin layout and service elements.

Delivery Timeline and Entry Into Service
The aircraft was delivered on February 27 from Boeing’s Charleston Delivery Center. After initial transfer to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), United technicians are completing post-delivery modifications.
The jet will undergo conformity testing at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston, including a required mini-evacuation demonstration. Following domestic proving flights, it will be based at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) for long-haul service.
United will host a formal Elevated product event in Los Angeles on March 24, 2026.

Fleet Outlook Through 2027
This aircraft is the first from United’s 100-aircraft Dreamliner order announced in December 2022, the largest 787 order in Boeing’s history.
Three additional Elevated 787-9 aircraft are scheduled for delivery within weeks. By 2027, approximately 30 Dreamliners in United’s fleet will feature the new interior standard, solidifying a long-term pivot toward premium international travel.
