DALLAS- Southwest Airlines (WN) will introduce Starlink satellite internet to deliver faster and more reliable inflight connectivity across its network.
The rollout begins this summer, with service expanding across aircraft serving Dallas Love Field (DAL) and destinations across 11 countries by 2026.

Southwest Chooses Starlink WiFi
Southwest Airlines plans a rapid installation of Starlink internet technology across its fleet, aiming to equip more than 300 aircraft by the end of 2026. The first aircraft fitted with the system will enter passenger service this summer.
Starlink, engineered by SpaceX, operates more than 9,000 low-Earth orbit satellites positioned closer to Earth than traditional systems. This setup allows faster speeds and lower latency, enabling onboard internet capable of streaming, messaging, gaming, and business work similar to home broadband.
Passengers are expected to experience stable connectivity from takeoff to landing, supporting streaming services, live sports viewing, messaging, downloads, and work applications.
Southwest executive Tony Roach described the move as part of a broader transformation at the airline, stating the goal is to raise customer expectations and demonstrate that the airline is evolving beyond its traditional product offering.

Southwest Becomes Fourth US Airline Using Starlink

United Airlines is currently installing the technology across its fleet, and as of early 2026, nearly all of its dual-cabin regional jets already operate with Starlink connectivity.
Hawaiian Airlines already provides Starlink internet on its Airbus fleet, while sister carrier Alaska Airlines, both operating under Alaska Air Group since their 2024 merger, has begun installing the system across its aircraft as well.
The rapid adoption across multiple carriers signals an industry-wide shift toward low-Earth orbit satellite connectivity, replacing slower legacy satellite systems.

Passenger Benefits from Starlink Connectivity
Starlink connectivity supports a wide range of onboard digital needs:
- High-definition streaming and live entertainment access
- Real-time messaging and social media use
- Faster browsing and downloads
- Reliable connectivity for remote work and collaboration
- Support for cloud applications and online gaming
Southwest already offers free WiFi to Rapid Rewards members on equipped aircraft through its partnership with T-Mobile. Starlink significantly improves speed and reliability, delivering a connectivity experience closer to home internet service.

Cabin Modernization Expands Beyond Internet Access
The Starlink rollout coincides with major product changes at Southwest, including one of the largest operational shifts in the airline’s history.
The airline is transitioning to assigned seating while introducing premium seating and extra legroom options. These changes mark a departure from Southwest’s long-standing open seating model.
Additional fleet improvements include:
- Introduction of new RECARO aircraft seats
- Installation of in-seat power outlets across cabins
- Larger overhead bins for carry-on storage
- Device holders integrated into seatbacks
- Extra legroom seating with upgraded snack and beverage options on select routes
- Improved boarding priority for premium seat customers and loyalty members
Industry observers also note Southwest is evaluating future premium upgrades such as airport lounges and additional premium seating, although no official announcements have been made.

Loyalty Program and Network Strength
Rapid Rewards members continue to receive benefits such as free inflight WiFi, loyalty points earning, and redemption options across Southwest’s network.
Southwest serves 118 airports across 11 countries and remains one of the largest domestic carriers in the United States. The airline carried over 134 million passengers in 2025 and employs more than 72,000 people.
Fleet upgrades, connectivity improvements, and cabin modernization signal the airline’s ongoing effort to enhance passenger experience while maintaining its low-cost operating model.
