CALGARY— WestJet (WS) has announced the launch of non-stop service between Calgary International Airport (YYC) and São Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), marking the airline’s 100th direct destination from its Calgary hub. The route will begin operations on November 8, 2026, subject to final government approvals, and will operate three times weekly using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
The new service establishes the only non-stop air link between Western Canada and South America, significantly expanding WestJet’s long-haul footprint from Calgary. São Paulo becomes the airline’s first destination on the continent and reinforces Calgary’s position as a strategic mid-sized international gateway.

WestJet Adds Calgary to Sao Paulo Flight
WestJet’s Calgary growth reflects a three-decade relationship with the city, evolving from domestic point-to-point flying into a multi-continental network spanning four continents.
Reaching 100 non-stop destinations from YYC highlights the airline’s long-term investment strategy and reliance on Calgary as a core hub for widebody operations.
The Calgary–São Paulo route complements WestJet’s existing transpacific and transatlantic services, positioning YYC as a connector between Asia, Europe, and now South America.
Airport authorities have described the milestone as a catalyst for inbound tourism, trade, and international business development.

South America Connectivity
São Paulo is the largest city in the Americas and the primary economic and aviation hub of South America.
The new route provides Western Canadian travelers with direct access to Brazil while opening seamless onward connectivity across the continent through LATAM Airlines Group, WestJet’s key South American partner.
Pending regulatory approvals, passengers traveling via GRU will gain access to more than 30 destinations, including Lima, Santiago, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and Montevideo.
The service also complements WestJet’s existing Latin American partnerships, which include agreements with Aeroméxico and Copa Airlines.

Cargo and Tourism Impact
Beyond passenger traffic, the route adds widebody belly-cargo capacity between Canada and Brazil, supporting time-sensitive shipments such as perishables, pharmaceuticals, and industrial components.
Calgary’s growing role as a cargo transit hub is expected to benefit from two-way trade flows between North and South America.
Tourism bodies have emphasized the route’s value for winter travel demand, offering Canadians direct access to Brazil’s cultural centers, coastal destinations, and business markets.
At the same time, the service is expected to attract Brazilian visitors seeking access to Alberta’s winter tourism, outdoor experiences, and major events.

Bottom Line
WestJet’s Calgary–São Paulo service represents a strategic network milestone, unlocking South America for Western Canada while reinforcing Calgary’s status as a globally connected hub.
As the airline reaches 100 non-stop destinations from YYC, the route underscores the commercial, tourism, and cargo potential of long-haul expansion anchored in Western Canada.
