CALGARY— Etihad Airways (EY) is preparing to launch its first nonstop service between Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) and Calgary International Airport (YYC), with the inaugural flight now scheduled for October 25, 2026.
The route will give Calgary its first direct air connection with the Middle East and strengthen Etihad’s growing presence in North America.
The new service will cover roughly 7,168 miles (11,536 kilometers), making it one of Etihad’s longer routes. The airline will deploy its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the connection, while the current schedule shows a westbound journey of about 14 hours and 35 minutes.
Etihad Airways Calgary Flight
Etihad originally announced the Abu Dhabi-Calgary route with a November 3 launch date, but subsequently moved the inaugural service forward by nine days to October 25.
The change means the new route is now only two months away, adding another destination to Etihad’s expanding North American network.
The airline plans to operate four flights each week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Flight EY29 will depart Abu Dhabi at 2:25 a.m. and arrive in Calgary at 7:00 a.m. local time, while the return EY30 is scheduled to leave Calgary around 1:00 p.m.
Calgary will become Etihad’s second destination in Canada after Toronto, while the airline already serves North America through cities including New York, Chicago and Charlotte.
The new connection will also provide Calgary passengers with one-stop access to destinations across Etihad’s wider network through Abu Dhabi.
Etihad’s Boeing 787-9 Flights to Calgary
The Boeing 787-9 will provide the capacity for the new long-haul service, with Etihad highlighting its Business and Economy cabins for the route.
The aircraft is well suited to the long-distance operation because of its range and widebody configuration.
Current schedule information lists Business Class and Economy Class on the nonstop service, rather than First Class or Premium Economy.
The route’s approximately 11,500-kilometer distance will make it a significant addition to Etihad’s long-haul network.
Calgary Gets Middle East Link
The launch will mark a significant change in Calgary’s international connectivity because no airline currently operates a nonstop Calgary-Middle East route.
Etihad’s service will therefore establish the first direct link between Western Canada’s largest city and the region.
The route also follows an earlier attempt to establish Middle Eastern connectivity from Calgary Simple Flying flagged.
WestJet had secured slots for planned Calgary-Dubai flights several years ago, but those services never entered operation, leaving Etihad to establish the city’s first nonstop Middle Eastern connection.
For travellers, the new service will reduce the need for an intermediate stop when travelling between Alberta and Abu Dhabi.
It will also open additional connecting opportunities through Etihad’s hub for passengers travelling between Western Canada, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
