CHIBA— Jetstar Japan (GK) has launched direct flights between Narita International Airport (NRT), near Tokyo, and Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH), marking the airline’s first new international route in more than eight years. The daily service connects Japan’s primary international gateway with southern Taiwan’s largest port city.
The new route positions Jetstar Japan as the only Japanese low-cost carrier operating nonstop between Narita and Kaohsiung. The airline says the schedule is designed to maximize time at the destination, with an arrival in Kaohsiung around early afternoon, enabling leisure and business travelers to make fuller use of the day.

Jetstar Adds New International Destination
Jetstar Japan operates one daily round-trip flight on the Narita–Kaohsiung sector using its Airbus A320 configured for high-density regional travel.
The outbound service departs Narita in the morning and reaches Kaohsiung shortly after midday, while the return leg leaves Taiwan in the afternoon and arrives back in Japan in the evening.
| Attribute | GK17 (NRT → KHH) | GK18 (KHH → NRT) |
|---|---|---|
| Origin airport | Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) | Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) |
| Departure time | 09:25 | 14:00 |
| Destination airport | Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) | Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) |
| Arrival time | 13:00 | 18:30 |
The carrier describes the timing as a competitive advantage, noting that it is the earliest Kaohsiung-bound departure from Narita. This positioning allows Japanese travelers to extend their stay at the destination without requiring an overnight departure or late arrival.
The airline aims to capture demand from price-sensitive leisure travelers as well as small and medium-sized enterprises seeking efficient regional connectivity.

Strategic network expansion
The Narita–Kaohsiung route represents Jetstar Japan’s first international network addition since the mid-2010s. During that period, the airline focused primarily on consolidating its domestic operations amid changing market conditions and fleet adjustments.
The decision to resume international expansion reflects a more stable operating environment and sustained recovery in cross-border travel.
Kaohsiung plays a central role in southern Taiwan’s economy and tourism sector. The city combines heavy industry and port activity with a growing creative economy, anchored by redeveloped waterfront warehouses, cultural venues, and large-scale retail complexes.
From a competitive standpoint, most direct Narita–Kaohsiung services are operated by foreign carriers, including codeshare arrangements involving Japan’s full-service airlines.
Jetstar Japan’s entry introduces a low-cost option on the route, potentially stimulating demand through lower fares and simplified service offerings.

Market and demand outlook
The airline expects the new service to benefit from two-way demand flows. Japanese travelers are returning to overseas leisure destinations, while southern Taiwan continues to generate inbound tourism and visiting-friends-and-relatives traffic to Japan.
Narita’s extensive domestic and international connectivity further supports the route by enabling onward travel beyond the Tokyo region.
The route also strengthens economic ties between Japan and Taiwan at a time when regional travel patterns are normalizing.
By offering a daily, year-round service, Jetstar Japan signals confidence in the sustainability of demand rather than treating the route as a short-term or seasonal experiment.

Bottom Line
Jetstar Japan’s launch of direct Narita–Kaohsiung flights marks a significant milestone in the airline’s international strategy after an eight-year pause.
By pairing a high-density schedule with a large southern Taiwanese market, the carrier aims to secure a durable foothold in regional international travel as Asia-Pacific demand continues to rebound.
