MELBOURNE– Singapore Airlines (SQ) confirmed plans to relocate and rebuild its existing SilverKris lounge in Melbourne Airport (MEL) with a brand-new facility expected to open in late 2026 or early 2027.
With SQ already rolling out next-generation lounges at its overseas outstations — after announcing in May 2023 that it would refurbish several facilities to match the elevated standard of its recently renewed lounge at Changi Airport (SIN) Terminal 3 — this major upgrade in Melbourne is a welcome development for frequent flyers.

Singapore Airlines Lounge in Melbourne
The lounge is set to be 30 per cent larger than the existing space, signalling a significant step up for Melbourne Airport’s premium lounge offering. Construction is expected to begin “soon”, though the exact new location within Terminal 2 remains unconfirmed.
According to Mainly Miles, SQ’s Vice President of Lounge Development and Inflight Operations, Timothy Chua, spoke during the recent unveiling of the new First Class SilverKris Lounge at Changi Terminal 2, where he described the Melbourne lounge as the “ugly duckling” of the network and indicated that plans were firmly on the cards for relocation and rebuilding.
The upgraded Melbourne facility will maintain the lounge format with separate First Class and Business Class sections.
The move out of the current basement location aims to provide a light-filled, more spacious environment — likely with large windows and a more elevated ambience akin to SQ’s newer lounges overseas.

Location & Timing
Currently housed in the basement of Terminal 2 at Melbourne Airport, the existing SilverKris lounge has for years drawn criticism for its windowless setting and aged interior, having last undergone significant renovation in mid-2013.
SQ has secured a new space, and the build will start ahead of its targeted opening of late 2026 or early 2027. With the move, they aim to align the Melbourne lounge with the airline’s latest design language and lounge-experience standards adopted elsewhere.
It’s worth noting that the current lounge area is positioned in an arrivals-expansion zone of Terminal 2, which will be redeveloped in the coming years.
This redevelopment factored into the decision to relocate the lounge to a more suitable, higher-visibility location — improving passenger experience and aligning with airport planning.

What Travellers Can Expect
Beyond the larger footprint, passengers should anticipate many of the amenities seen in SQ’s latest lounge concepts: a signature batik wall entrance, productivity pods and work-friendly zones, dedicated live-cooking stations, full-service bars, and enhanced comfort seating.
These features already appear in SQ’s newly unveiled First Class SilverKris Lounge at Changi Terminal 2.
For Melbourne-based premium flyers, this means leaving behind the “lounge dungeon” of Terminal 2’s basement and moving into a facility that matches international standards.
The upgrade reaffirms a commitment by SQ to bring its outstation lounges up to par with its flagship hub experience.

Bottom Line
The announcement of an all-new SilverKris lounge at Melbourne Airport is excellent news for passengers on SQ routes into and out of MEL.
With a 30 % increase in size, a relocation to a prime space, and the latest design and amenity standards applied, the upgrade promises a substantial improvement over the current facility.
However, passengers still face a wait — the projected opening in late 2026 or early 2027 means the existing lounge will continue to operate in the interim. But for those flying with SQ regularly, the future lounge should make the wait worthwhile.
