HONG KONG– An Air India (AI) Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner encountered a minor technical issue at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) on Thursday morning (October 16, 2025), briefly delaying its scheduled flight to Delhi (DEL).
The aircraft, registered as VT-ANO, was operating as flight AI315 when onboard systems detected an anomaly requiring ground checks before takeoff. The flight was initially scheduled to depart at around 8:50 a.m. local time, but was held back for safety inspections.
Air India 787 Technical Issue
According to Air India officials, the delay was caused by a minor fault that required the resetting of an onboard component. Engineers performed a routine diagnostic check, after which the aircraft resumed normal operations.
The airline emphasized that at no point was passenger safety compromised and that such technical resets are a standard precautionary procedure for modern aircraft systems.
The affected Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is one of the key widebody aircraft in Air India’s international fleet. The aircraft type is known for its advanced composite structure, fuel efficiency, and long-haul capability.
However, VT-ANO has been involved in earlier technical events, including an incident earlier this month in which the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) was deployed unexpectedly while approaching Birmingham Airport (BHX).
Airline’s Safety Commitment
In light of such occurrences, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has instructed Air India to reinspect the RAT units across its 787 fleet.
The RAT serves as an emergency power source, deploying automatically during complete hydraulic or electrical failures to sustain critical flight systems.
After maintenance teams addressed the issue and conducted necessary resets, the aircraft was cleared for operation and departed at approximately 11:30 a.m., arriving safely in Delhi later that afternoon.
An Air India spokesperson reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to safety, stating that “the safety of passengers and crew remains the company’s highest priority”, reported The Economic Times.
The airline also noted that technical delays, while inconvenient, reflect the strength of proactive safety checks designed to identify and resolve anomalies before departure.
India’s aviation regulator has been closely monitoring Air India’s Dreamliner fleet following recent technical issues. In coordination with Boeing, inspections have been ongoing to ensure all aircraft systems conform to airworthiness requirements.
Experts say such regulatory vigilance is essential as Air India continues its international expansion and modernization program under the Tata Group.
