DUBAI- School students in the UAE demonstrated their engineering skills at the eighth Water Rocket Competition, hosted by Emirates Aviation University (EAU) in collaboration with Boeing.
The annual event aims to foster innovation, promote STEM education, and encourage hands-on problem-solving.
The competition challenged students to design and launch rockets using basic materials, harnessing only water and air pressure.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts to develop the next generation of aerospace professionals.
Emirates and Boeing Water Rocket Competition
The Water Rocket Competition, held at EAU’s Dubai campus, brought together students from grades 11 and 12, working in teams of four.
Each team built rockets using readily available materials, ensuring accessibility and fostering creativity.
The rockets were launched at a precise 45-degree angle, relying solely on water and air pressure for propulsion.
Professor Ahmad Al Ali, Vice Chancellor of Emirates Aviation University, emphasized the competition’s role in shaping future engineers and scientists.
He stated, “The Water Rocket Competition is part of our corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Not only does the competition ignite curiosity in young minds, but it also equips future industry leaders with the skills and passion needed to drive the world forward.
We hope they are inspired to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. We’re delighted with this opportunity to give back to the local community and proud to partner with Boeing.”
Boeing’s Commitment
Kuljit Ghata-Aura, President of Boeing Middle East, Türkiye, Africa, and Central Asia, highlighted the significance of investing in STEM initiatives.
“With the UAE experiencing growth in aviation and space exploration, there continues to be a rising demand for aerospace talent.
Partnering with Emirates Aviation University allows us to inspire the next generation of aerospace professionals and provide students with the opportunity to gain technical skills from Boeing engineers during this competition.”
Boeing has collaborated with Emirates Aviation University since 2017, supporting several key initiatives.
This partnership has led to advancements such as the installation of a wind tunnel in the university’s lab, reinforcing Boeing’s dedication to nurturing young talent in aviation and engineering.
Achievements in the Competition
A panel of judges from Emirates Aviation University and Boeing evaluated the launches and announced the winning teams.
The standout performance came from “It’s Not Rocket Science” from Dubai English Speaking College, whose rocket soared to an unprecedented 120 meters, setting a new record.
- First Runners-up: Rocket Riders from Dubai Scholars Private School (117 meters)
- Second Runners-up: Eagle 1 from Islamiya English School (115 meters)
Since its inception in 2017, the Water Rocket Competition has engaged over 1,000 students from 100 schools, fostering technical skills and problem-solving abilities.
The event continues to inspire young minds and strengthen the UAE’s STEM education landscape.
