Zetfly Aviation, the parent company of Air Kerala, secured a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from India’s civil aviation ministry in July 2024 and is targeting an Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) by mid-2025.
The airline plans to commence domestic operations from Kochi to Tier II and Tier III cities in the second quarter of 2025, with international flights to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region to follow.
Air Kerala CEO Harish Kutty highlighted the airline’s significance to the global Malayalee community, describing it as the fulfillment of a long-held dream. He confirmed that Air Kerala is in the pre-application phase for its AOC and expects to complete the process by April 2025, acknowledging the procedural challenges involved.
To prepare for its launch, Air Kerala is negotiating a dry lease of three 78-seater ATR 72-600 aircraft, scheduled for delivery in mid-2025. The airline aims to offer affordable travel options for expatriate Malayalees, focusing on accessibility and cost efficiency.
The airline plans to begin international operations in 2028, adhering to Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) regulations that require a fleet of at least 20 aircraft for overseas flights. Founder of Smart Travels, Afi Ahmed, emphasized the airline’s long-term vision to expand international routes once the fleet meets this requirement, with an initial investment of approximately Dh1.1 billion.
Air Kerala’s fleet expansion strategy includes acquiring narrowbody aircraft such as Boeing 737s or Airbus A320s to meet the 20-aircraft benchmark by 2028, ensuring readiness for international service while scaling domestic operations.
