DELHI, TOKYO- Japan Airlines (JL) or JAL and IndiGo Airlines (6E) will initiate their codeshare partnership on December 16, 2024, connecting travelers across Japan and India through an integrated network.
The partnership extends JAL’s reach into India’s major cities through IndiGo’s domestic routes, leveraging connections with JAL’s existing flights to Delhi (DEL) and Bengaluru (BLR).
IndiGo Japan Airlines Codeshare
IndiGo, commanding over 60% of India’s aviation market share, strengthens JAL’s presence in the rapidly growing Indian market.
JAL currently operates daily flights between Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and Delhi, while maintaining five weekly connections between Tokyo’s Narita Airport and Bengaluru. The codeshare agreement will expand these international routes by linking them with IndiGo’s extensive domestic network.
President Mitsuko Tottori leads JAL’s operations from its Shinagawa-ku headquarters in Tokyo, while IndiGo operates under CEO Pieter Elbers from its New Delhi base.
Executive Remarks
Senior executives from both airlines emphasize the strategic importance of their new codeshare agreement in strengthening India-Japan connectivity and bilateral relations.
IndiGo’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning & Revenue Management, Abhijit DasGupta, states the partnership opens new travel channels between India and Japan. The collaboration targets business travelers while promoting tourism to cultural destinations across both nations.
The agreement aligns with ongoing strategic cooperation between India and Japan, reinforcing IndiGo’s commitment to providing affordable, punctual, and customer-focused service across its network.
Japan Airlines’ Managing Executive Officer and Senior Vice President of Route Marketing, Ross Leggett, highlights the significance of partnering with India’s largest domestic carrier. The alliance enables single-ticket bookings across both airlines’ networks, combining their respective service standards.
Leggett points to India’s economic growth driving increased air travel demand between the countries. The partnership connects travelers to 18 Indian destinations through codeshare routes.
The collaboration aims to expand customer options for tourists and business travelers while maintaining high service standards through IndiGo’s operational efficiency and JAL’s international expertise.
Both airlines envision a future expansion of their partnership to enhance travel convenience and strengthen economic ties between India and Japan.
Codeshare Routes
Japan Airlines will begin ticket sales for its codeshare flights with IndiGo on December 4, 2024, with operations commencing December 16, 2024, pending government approvals.
The partnership establishes extensive connectivity across India through 30 IndiGo-operated domestic routes. Delhi serves as a primary hub, connecting to 15 major destinations including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata. Bengaluru functions as a secondary hub, linking 15 additional domestic destinations.
The codeshare agreement includes JAL’s Southeast Asian network, featuring routes between Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports to Bangkok and Singapore. JAL also maintains service between Osaka’s Kansai International Airport and Bangkok.
Key Delhi connections include:
- Northern destinations: Amritsar, Leh
- Western hubs: Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune
- Southern metros: Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad
- Eastern destinations: Kolkata, Varanasi
- Coastal destinations: Goa, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram
