MIAMI – On 6th November 2024, an American Airlines (AA) Boeing 787 encountered a gear door issue shortly after takeoff from Miami International Airport (MIA).
The Boeing 787-8 with registration N873BB was operating flight AA525 from Miami (MIA) to New York JFK. Flight AA525 took off from Miami’s runway 08R and as the aircraft began its initial climb, the flight crew reported an issue with the landing gear doors.

Following the issue, the crew decided to stop their ascent at 5,000 feet. The crew then held at a safe altitude over Miami to assess and manage the problem, as reported by the Aviation Herald.
Observers later noted the left main gear bogie tilted abnormally, a rare but potentially serious issue indicating that the gear system did not fully retract into its proper alignment.
Once the crew had stabilized the situation, they prepared for an emergency landing on Miami’s runway 09, bringing the aircraft down safely without further incident. The 4.3-year-old aircraft stayed grounded in Miami for three days, undergoing necessary inspections and repairs before returning to regular service.
Landing Gear Incidents: A Brief Overview
Landing gear issues, while uncommon, can present various operational risks and often require skilled handling.
Gear-related problems can occur during takeoff, landing, or taxiing, and may involve components like gear doors, brakes, or even the bogie tilt system, as seen in the American Airlines incident.
Recent Qatar Airways B787 Landing Gear Mishap at Doha
In a recent landing gear incident, a Qatar Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner faced a serious gear-related mishap on October 25, 2024, at Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha.
Upon arriving at the gate, the right main landing gear became lodged in a drain area on the tarmac, causing the right engine to make contact with the ground. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and all passengers were safely disembarked and accommodated on alternate flights.
The incident was recorded and circulated on social media, prompting questions about the structural integrity of the airport’s tarmac. Initial reports suggested that the affected aircraft, likely registered as A7-BCV, last operated as flight QR663 from Colombo to Doha.
Qatar Airways released a statement, clarifying that the mishap occurred due to the right landing gear impacting an on-ground structure rather than a gear failure.
Following the event, Qatar Airways and airport authorities are investigating the cause to prevent future incidents.
