CHINA- On March 29, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs cautioned its citizens about difficult travel circumstances to the United States, citing increased instances of Chinese students and corporate personnel facing ‘unwarranted interrogations and harassment’ by US airport law enforcement officers.
According to a report from the South China Morning Post, China’s travel advisory to its citizens visiting the US emphasizes the importance of taking safety measures and making preparations for “a range of unforeseen circumstances.
China New Travel Advisory
The Ministry and Chinese Embassy, along with Consulates in the US, have formally raised concerns with the United States.
Since November 2023, Chinese media reports indicate that at least eight Chinese students with valid documentation have encountered searches, interrogations, or deportations solely at Washington Dulles International Airport.
Additionally, a PhD candidate in biological sciences recounts undergoing a body search, an eight-hour interrogation, and 12 hours of solitary confinement before being deported from Dulles airport in December of last year. She had plans to return to the US to continue her studies.
These occurrences seem to contradict the recent efforts of both nations to promote educational and cultural exchanges. During a visit to the US in November, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced China’s intention to welcome 50,000 young Americans for study within the next five years.
