NEW YORK- American Airlines (AA) is establishing a pilot base for Boeing 787 aircraft in New York (JFK), reported by aviation watchdog JonNYC.
This strategic move enables the airline to deploy the 787s directly from New York JFK, eliminating the need to relocate pilots from other cities.
American Airlines 787 Pilot Base
American Airlines has predominantly utilized Boeing 777s for its long-haul international routes until now, reported Viewfromthewing.
The current action indicates that the airline is likely planning to operate newly delivered Boeing 787-9s, particularly those configured with a significant emphasis on premium seating, including new business class suites with doors, from New York. This choice aligns with the market’s premium nature compared to other potential opportunities.
Confirmed information points to the upcoming Dallas – Brisbane route being serviced by these aircraft, leading to the expectation of several new delivery 787-9s also being assigned to New York initially.
According to JonNYC, the pilot base is set to begin with a staff of 20 captains and 20 first officers, sufficient to support a single long-haul destination.
Among American’s current destinations, the most probable choices appear to be the frequently weight-restricted Delhi (thus favoring a premium-configured Boeing 787-9 with fewer seats) or Tokyo Haneda.
American Airlines could also operate smaller Boeing 787-8 aircraft from New York. These aircraft accommodate fewer passengers than the Boeing 777, enabling the airline to expand its route offerings and mitigate financial losses during the non-seasonal European season, particularly in the winter.
