UNITED KINGDOM– A surprising incident unfolded during a Ryanair (FR) flight from the UK to Spain as eight men engaged in a mid-air fight, leading to an unexpected diversion to Portugal.
The altercation occurred on Ryanair flight 3511, traveling from Luton (LTN) to Lanzarote (ACE), at approximately 8:15 am on January 19, as reported by The Daily Mail. Originally bound for Arrecife, the flight was redirected to Faro, Portugal, and touched down around 10:50 am, as indicated by the flight tracking website FlightAware.
Ryanair Mid-Air Fight
A cohort of inebriated men initiated disturbances with female passengers, leading a flight attendant to step in, as reported by the New York Post on Saturday. As the altercation escalated, the flight attendant was pushed over.
In response, the captain addressed the passengers over the loudspeaker, cautioning against “unacceptable behavior” and threatening to divert the plane to Portugal if the disruptions persisted.
Despite the prior warning, the disruptive passengers persisted in their disorderly conduct, leading to the decision to divert the flight to the city of Faro in southern Portugal. While one passenger voluntarily deboarded upon request, he later reentered the plane.
Portuguese authorities then forcibly removed him, employing a headlock. Bystanders captured the incident on video, with fellow passengers heard encouraging the police. The unruly passenger was ultimately placed in a police car, with onlookers shouting farewells.
Portugal’s Public Security Police confirmed the incident, citing eight passengers involved in shouting, hitting cabin luggage lockers, and disregarding instructions from the flight crew. Physical force was necessary to remove one hostile and resistant passenger.
Following police intervention, the flight resumed its journey from Faro at 11:50 am and eventually reached its intended destination, Arrecife, at 1:20 pm.
