TOKYO- A collision on the runway at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND) between a Coast Guard aircraft and a Japan Airlines (JL) Airbus A350 resulted in the death of five individuals aboard the Coast Guard plane, according to the country’s transport minister, Tetsuo Saito.
He stated, “Regarding the Coast Guard plane, we have been informed that the captain escaped and five people were confirmed dead,” based on information from the news agency AFP.
Japan Airlines A350 Crash
Simultaneously, all 379 passengers and crew on the Japan Airlines plane managed to escape the fire that broke out following the collision with the Coast Guard aircraft.
Footage from public broadcaster NHK depicted the aircraft engulfed in flames while rescue teams worked to contain the fire.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has directed relevant agencies to collaborate in promptly assessing the damage, as reported by his office.
The Japan Coast Guard is currently investigating the potential collision between one of its aircraft and a passenger jet. NHK, citing Reuters, reported that five out of the six crew members of the Coast Guard aircraft, initially unaccounted for after the crash, were later located. The pilot was successfully evacuated.
Following the incident, Haneda Airport has closed all runways, according to a spokesperson for the airport, as conveyed by Reuters.
The aircraft involved an Airbus A350 JAL flight JL516, originating from Shin Chitose airport, which erupted in flames on the runway at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.
Collision with Coast Guard
It is suggested that the incident occurred after landing, possibly involving a collision with another aircraft, potentially a Japan Coast Guard plane.
Video footage from NHK captured substantial bursts of fire and smoke emanating from the Japan Airlines plane’s side while it taxied on the runway. The aircraft was subsequently completely consumed by the fire.
According to a spokesperson from the airline, all 367 passengers, along with eight toddlers and 12 crew members aboard the plane, were successfully evacuated, as reported by Bloomberg.
