LISBON- TAP Air Portugal (TP), in its schedule update for the week of September 25, 2023, has announced service modifications for its Lisbon (LIS) to Cancun (CUN) route.
According to Flightconnections, as of November 2023, TAP Portugal, a member of the Star Alliance, operates flights to 7 domestic destinations and 80 international destinations spanning 32 countries.
TAP Air Portugal Suspends Cancun Flights
The airline will temporarily suspend operations on this route during the Northern summer season in 2024, from March 31, 2024, to October 26, 2024. However, the Star Alliance member intends to resume service on this route starting October 29, 2024, as reported by Aeroroutes.
TAP Portugal had initially submitted flight schedules for up to 5 weekly flights during the Northern Summer 2024 season. Here is the proposed schedule between April 1, 2024, and July 8, 2024:
- Flight TP277 departing from Lisbon at 13:40 and arriving in Cancun at 17:55 on certain days (not operating on days 2 and 7).
- Flight TP278 departing from Cancun at 19:25 and arriving in Lisbon at 10:40 the following day on certain days (not operating on days 2 and 7).
Lufthansa Air France-KLM to Buy TP
Recently, the German flag carrier Lufthansa (LH) and Air France-KLM have shown interest in TAP Air Portugal (TP) after the Portuguese government’s announcement of its intention to sell a majority stake in the national airline.
The government made an official statement, revealing that the Council of Ministers had approved a decree to sell at least 51% of TAP Air Portugal while reserving up to 5% for its employees.
Finance Minister Fernando Medina emphasized the government’s aim to attract substantial investors, individually or as part of consortia, who are committed to utilizing TAP Air Portugal to enhance its position as a national hub in Lisbon and increase capacity at other domestic airports, including Porto.
Medina clarified the government’s intention: “We do not seek to attract pure financial investments aimed at acquiring TAP to sell it or its parts later. We want to emphasize TAP’s strategic importance to the country.”
This decision to privatize the airline opens the door for further consolidation within Europe’s aviation industry, following Lufthansa’s acquisition of a 41% stake in ITA Airways (formerly Alitalia) and the agreement by International Consolidated Airlines Group, the parent company of British Airways, to purchase Spanish carrier Air Europa.
