New T2 Terminal
In April 2023, the initial stage of the new integrated terminal building (NITB) T2 was officially opened at Chennai International Airport in Tamil Nadu, India.
Developed at an expense of Rs12.6bn ($154.4m) by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), this NITB constitutes a crucial component of the second phase of modernizing Chennai Airport.
Completing the first phase of NITB T2 has expanded the airport’s annual passenger capacity from 23 million to 30 million.
The ongoing Phase II of the NITB T2 initiative is anticipated to further enlarge the terminal area to 197,000m² (2.2 million ft²) and augment the airport’s annual passenger-handling capacity to 35 million.
The terminal is equipped with top-tier facilities, including 11 automated tray retrieval systems and six self-bag drop stations.
It incorporates a passenger flow monitoring system (PFMS) integrated with 3D sensors and e-Gates, which streamline the boarding process and enhance passenger convenience during travel.
The modern terminal boasts a dedicated baggage scanning system and an advanced baggage handling system (BHS) that reduces the likelihood of mishandled luggage.
Furthermore, it features a total of 100 new check-in counters, over 100 immigration counters, self-service check-in kiosks, six baggage reclaim conveyor belts, 17 elevators, 17 escalators, and six moving walkways, all contributing to a markedly improved passenger journey.
