MUMBAI- India’s leading Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO), GMR Aero Technic, has carried out India’s first Passenger to Freighter (P2F) Conversion of ATR-72 at its Hyderabad base.
GMR Aero Technic (GAT) is a prominent airframe Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility. It is located at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, India.
Further, it holds various certifications and approvals from authoritative aviation bodies, including DGCA-India, EASA, FAA-US, PACA-Oman, and CAA-Vietnam.
GMR P2F ATR-72 Conversion
1978 established GMR Group subsidiary MRO carried out India’s first P2F conversion of ATR-72 aircraft. Furthermore, the plane has the registration VT-TMP; earlier, it was operated by TruJet (2T).
Trujet is the regional carrier, and it used to operate the fleet of ATR-72. Currently, the airline is grounded amid financial woes and senior management issues.
The MRO announced the achievement on its social media platform. Subsequently, they wrote, “The boys played well. So Proud of our team that accomplished our very first Passenger to Freighter (P2F) conversion Modification on the ATR72 Aircraft.”

The image shows the engineering and maintenance team posing for a photo in front of the P2F Converted ATR-72. Now the aircraft bears the registration 2-ELIX, owned by Albelo, the Ireland-based company.
About ATR 72 aircraft
According to planespotters.net, the aircraft involved in the P2F conversion is 13 years and six months old ATR-72 with MSN 875. Firstly, the Malaysia-based Berjaya Air took delivery of it on Dec 2009. After operating for almost 9 months, Papua new guinea based Airlines PNG operated it.
Again Berjaya Air took redelivery in 2012. Furthermore, after three years, India’s Trujet took the plane in 2015 and operated the aircraft for almost seven years.
Subsequently, the Ireland-based Elix Aviation Capital took the aircraft in April 2022. Finally, Albelo has contracted GMR, which has converted the aircraft to a freighter version.
