Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad Airport, operated by GMR, has been named the airport with the best On-Time Performance (OTP) globally, significantly boosting the Indian aviation industry.
A major development for India’s infrastructure push is that one Indian airport has surpassed Japanese airports in on-time performance. Additionally, the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru is among the top airports in the world for on-time performance in March 2023, according to aviation analytics company Cirium.
Every airport in the world had its 3 million flights examined by Cirium, which then categorized each airport into one of four categories.
The four categories are classified as follows based mostly on the number of seats they offer: 1) Global Airport (25-40 million seats and serve at least three areas), 2) Large Airport (25-40 million seats), 3) Medium Airport (15-25 million seats), and 4) Small Airport (5-15 million seats). This is not the first time that Indian airports have received top marks from Cirium for punctuality.
Hyderabad Airport Tops OTP List
Ahead of other larger airports in India, including Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, and Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport and Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport both ranked among the top performers globally in terms of punctuality in November 2022.
According to the Cirium research, Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD), which had an OTP of 90.43 percent, was the only airport in the world to surpass the 90 percent on-time departure (OTD) barrier. 14,658 single-segment flights were booked at the airport in March. It serves 29 airlines and 77 itineraries.
Colombia’s El Dorado International (BOG) in Bogota came in second with 86.14%, followed by Kempegowda International (BLR) in Bengaluru.
With an OTP of 77.74%, Copenhagen Airport (CPH) completed the top 20. In the Global Airport category, Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport was listed among the top 20 airlines for on-time arrivals in November 2022.
Large Airports category
Hyderabad and Bengaluru were at the top of the list in the Large Airports category, which can also include airports that are featured on the Global Airports rankings.
With an OTP of almost 90%, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) in Hyderabad has performed remarkably well in this area. Typically, all three of the top airports in this category are found in Japan. India could not have any airports in the Small and Medium categories in the top 20 in any category.
With passenger traffic expected to hit an all-time high in 2022. India is one of the aviation markets with the fastest growth rates in the world.
Additionally, India has built more airports in the past ten years than most other nations worldwide. Subsequently, including domestic and international facilities.
