The Indian aviation regulator DGCA reported on Monday that 76.96 lakh domestic passengers flew in February, up 20% from 64.08 lakh in January.
The February data indicates that the domestic aviation sector is recovering following a 43 percent drop in January due to the Omicron coronavirus type.
In December of previous year, 1.12 million domestic travellers flew.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said in its monthly statement that passenger load factors — or occupancy rates — increased for all Indian carriers in February compared to January.
SpiceJet, IndiGo, Vistara, Go First, Air India, and AirAsia India’s load factors in February 2022 were 89.1 percent, 85.2 percent, 87.1 percent, 87 percent, 84.1 percent, and 83.2 percent, respectively.
The occupancy rates of these carriers, however, were 73.4 percent, 66.6 percent, 61.6 percent, 66.7 percent, 60.6 percent, and 60.5 percent in January 2022, according to the report.
Travel restrictions enacted in India and other countries in response to the Covid outbreak have had a substantial impact on the aviation sector in the last two years.
- IndiGo, India’s largest airline, transported 39.51 lakh passengers in February, accounting for 51.3 percent of the domestic market, according to the DGCA.
- According to DGCA data, SpiceJet carried 8.2 lakh passengers and Air India carried 8.55 lakh passengers in February.
- According to the report, Vistara, Go First, AirAsia India, and Alliance Air carried 7.49 lakh, 7.34 lakh, 4.46 lakh, and 1.12 lakh passengers in February, respectively.
IndiGo had the best on-time record of 95.4 percent in February at four metro airports – Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, according to DGCA data.
- According to the DGCA, Go First and Vistara were in second and third place at these four airports in February, with 94.1 percent and 90.9 percent on-time performance, respectively.
