PHNOM PENH- In response to surging passenger demand and a dedication to fostering tourism, trade, and investment between Cambodia and India, the national flag carrier Cambodia Angkor Air (K6) has announced its plans to inaugurate a direct flight between the two nations’ capitals.
“We are delighted to unveil our latest flight to India. Commencing from June 16, Cambodia Angkor Air will embark on an exceptional journey by initiating the first-ever direct flight from Phnom Penh (PNH) to New Delhi (DEL), offering four weekly flights to coincide with the Cambodia-India Tourism Year in 2024,” announced the airline on March 24.
Cambodia India Flights
The airline characterized the new Phnom Penh-New Delhi route as an expansion of its commitment to serving passengers by providing seamless connections to captivating destinations.
For adventurers eager to explore the plethora of temples, historical sites, and breathtaking natural landscapes in both nations, this journey to the historical wonders is a dream fulfilled.
Consequently, this new route is poised to attract more tourists and business travelers, thereby bolstering both countries’ tourism and economic sectors.
Thourn Sinan, the chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Cambodia chapter, recently conveyed to The Post that the airline’s initiative holds significant promise for enhancing tourism and trade ties between the two nations.
He emphasized, however, that the success of this endeavor is contingent upon pricing considerations.
“This announcement brings welcome news that we have eagerly awaited for many years. I have repeatedly reiterated the significance of the Indian market due to India’s substantial global traveler base. India boasts a rich cultural heritage and traditions,” he remarked.
Cultural and Religious Significance
As per Sinan’s insights, the Indian tourism market can be segmented into three main categories: cultural and historical exploration, shopping and nightlife experiences, and religious pilgrimages.
He highlighted that Indian travelers often express interest in visiting Phnom Penh and the ancient temples in Siem Reap and Battambang provinces.
In 2023, Cambodia recorded a significant rise in tourist arrivals, reaching 5.45 million foreign visitors, marking a 139.5% increase from the previous year.
Among these arrivals were 68,836 Indian tourists, reflecting a notable surge of 102.4% compared to the previous year, as the Ministry of Tourism reported.
Steady Growth
In terms of visitor arrivals, Indian tourists ranked 14th, following visitors from Thailand, Vietnam, China, Laos, the US, South Korea, Indonesia, France, the UK, Malaysia, Australia, Japan, and Russia.
In 2023, the trade volume between Cambodia and India reached $485.7 million, marking a 10.4% increase from the previous year. Cambodia’s exports to India amounted to $293.06 million, experiencing a significant surge of 49%, while imports were valued at $192.64 million, indicating a decrease of 20.8%.
According to the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE), India is Cambodia’s 17th-largest trading partner.
In 2019, Cambodia witnessed its highest influx of international tourists, totaling 6.61 million arrivals, representing a 6.6% increase from the previous year. Among these arrivals were 75,286 Indian tourists, reflecting a growth of 14.3%, as reported by the ministry.
