CHICAGO- American tennis player Jessica Pegula has criticised United Airlines (UA) after an unusual flight disruption left her stranded while the aircraft departed with her checked baggage still on board. The incident occurred during domestic travel, with Pegula taking to social media on November 2, 2026, to question how the airline could cancel a flight, send passengers to baggage claim and subsequently operate the same service without them.
The World No. 4 said passengers had spent more than two hours aboard the aircraft in heavy rain before receiving instructions to leave and collect their luggage. However, despite assurances from baggage staff that their belongings would be removed, the aircraft departed with the bags, prompting Pegula to describe the experience as one of the most extraordinary travel disruptions she had encountered.

Pegula Criticises United
Pegula shared her complaint on X, directly addressing United and questioning the airline’s handling of the cancellation and subsequent departure. Her account suggested that several passengers experienced the same problem, rather than the incident involving only her reservation.
According to the tennis star, passengers initially received notification that their flight had been cancelled and were directed to the baggage claim area. The airline then reversed the cancellation, but the aircraft departed before passengers could return to the plane or recover their checked belongings.
The disruption followed an extended delay on board. Pegula said passengers had remained inside the aircraft for more than two hours during torrential rain, while other travellers had already returned to the departure gate.
The situation became more complicated when baggage services reportedly continued assuring passengers that their luggage would be taken off the aircraft. However, the flight left before those assurances were fulfilled, leaving Pegula and other affected travellers without their checked bags.

US Baggage Security Rules
The incident has also drawn attention to how checked baggage is handled on domestic flights in the United States.
Unlike procedures that require passenger and baggage matching, airlines can transport certain checked bags without their owners when the baggage has undergone the required security screening.
Under Section 44901 of the US Code, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) must ensure that checked baggage carried on passenger aircraft is screened, Simple Flying flagged.
The legislation also recognises passenger-to-bag matching as one of the alternative security measures in circumstances where explosives-detection screening is unavailable.
This distinction is important because a passenger leaving an aircraft does not automatically mean their checked baggage must be removed under every domestic operating arrangement.
International operations generally apply stricter positive passenger-bag matching procedures, which require airlines to reconcile checked baggage with passengers travelling on the aircraft.
However, Pegula’s complaint raises a separate operational concern: passengers were reportedly told that their luggage would be removed, yet the aircraft departed before the process was completed.

Pegula Heads To Finals
United responded to Pegula’s public complaint on X, apologising for the frustration and asking her to send her booking confirmation through a direct message so the airline could investigate and provide assistance.

The disruption comes shortly before the 2026 WTA Finals, where Pegula is scheduled to compete in the season-ending championship at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California.
The tournament runs from November 8 to November 15 and features the leading singles players and doubles teams of the season.
Pegula has qualified for the tournament for the fifth consecutive year, making it an important part of her remaining competitive schedule. The baggage incident could complicate her travel preparations, although there has been no indication that it will affect her participation.
The episode also highlights how airline communication and coordination between flight operations and baggage-handling teams can become critical during irregular operations.
For affected passengers, the aircraft’s departure with their belongings created an additional problem beyond the original cancellation.
