DUBLIN— Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara has accused Ryanair (FR) gate personnel of discriminatory behaviour at Dublin Airport (DUB), alleging that he and his family experienced threatening conduct during a recent encounter. The Rajasthan Royals head coach raised the complaint on October 28, 2026, in a post on X, expressing shock at the staff’s conduct and describing the experience as unacceptable.
Sangakkara did not disclose what triggered the confrontation or provide further details about the airport encounter. Ryanair had not publicly responded to his allegations at the time of reporting, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear.

Former Sri Lankan Captain’s Ryanair Complaint
Sangakkara shared his concerns publicly after the encounter, questioning whether other passengers had experienced similar treatment from the airline’s gate personnel in Dublin.
He cited the tone used by staff, the handling of procedures and what he described as threatening behaviour.
The former cricketer said the incident was particularly disappointing because it was his first bad experience in Dublin. His post did not identify individual employees or specify whether the dispute involved boarding, travel documents or another airport procedure.
Sangakkara’s allegations have brought attention to passenger treatment at airport gates, where airline personnel manage boarding requirements and travel documentation.
However, his account alone does not establish the precise circumstances of the confrontation or independently verify the alleged discriminatory conduct.

Similar Experience Reported
Sangakkara’s post also drew a response from fellow Sri Lankan Sanjiva Weerawarana, who said he had encountered discrimination during his own experiences in Western countries.
Weerawarana referred to years of living abroad and travelling internationally, adding that he no longer wished to travel there unless necessary.
Sangakkara responded that experiencing such treatment could be jarring. Neither post provided evidence linking Weerawarana’s experiences to the incident involving Ryanair at Dublin Airport, The Hindustan Times flagged.
The exchange brought further attention to Sangakkara’s complaint, although the discussion did not establish whether the airline’s staff had breached its policies or whether a formal complaint had been lodged.
No detailed account of the incident or official response from Ryanair was available at the time.

Sangakkara’s Cricket Career
Sangakkara is widely regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s leading cricketers. He retired from international cricket in 2015 after 594 appearances across formats, scoring 12,400 runs in Test cricket and 14,234 in One Day Internationals.
He also holds a prominent role in franchise cricket as head coach of the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He previously worked with the franchise from 2021 to 2024, serving as both head coach and director of cricket.
Under his leadership, Rajasthan Royals reached the IPL final in 2022 for the first time since winning the inaugural tournament in 2008, but lost to the Gujarat Titans. The team finished fourth in the 2026 season.
The allegations at Dublin Airport remain unresolved publicly, with further clarification from Ryanair or Sangakkara potentially providing more information about the encounter.
Until additional details emerge, the incident remains based on Sangakkara’s account of his family’s experience with the airline’s gate personnel.
