DELHI- Air India (AI) is facing renewed criticism over passenger communication and ground support after a Delhi-to-Bengaluru flight experienced a lengthy delay following a technical problem. Passengers travelling on flight AI 2819 from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) to Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, reportedly waited more than six hours beyond the scheduled departure time before the aircraft finally took off.
The incident highlights a service issue that can compound the inconvenience of an aircraft malfunction: keeping passengers informed while engineering teams investigate a problem, arranging replacement aircraft and coordinating crew changes. An account published by Hindustan Times described repeated delays, confusion over the replacement aircraft’s boarding gate and a lack of clear updates, raising questions about how effectively the airline managed the disruption.

Air India Flight Faces Delays
According to the passenger’s account, AI 2819 was scheduled to depart Delhi at 3 p.m., with boarding planned for 2 p.m. After passengers boarded and the aircraft began taxiing, it stopped because of a technical issue.
The captain initially indicated that engineers would need only five to 10 minutes to resolve the problem, but the delay continued.
Engineering teams subsequently boarded the aircraft, and passengers waited for approximately another hour without receiving a detailed explanation.
The original cabin crew then reached the end of their duty hours, and a replacement crew boarded, adding another operational challenge to the disruption.
Although the captain later announced that the technical problem had been resolved, the aircraft remained stationary. Passengers were eventually asked to disembark and transfer to another aircraft, requiring buses to take them back to the terminal.
The disruption continued when passengers struggled to locate the correct boarding gate. According to the account, staff directed travellers to different gates, including Gates 37 and 42C, before passengers eventually identified Gate 43.
The absence of clear guidance left groups of travellers searching for information while waiting for the replacement aircraft.

Passenger Service Under Scrutiny
The replacement aircraft also faced a crew-related delay. When passengers finally boarded, the pilot had not yet arrived because the previous pilot had completed his duty hours and the replacement had not reported.
The flight eventually departed at approximately 9:30 p.m., around six and a half hours behind schedule.
The passenger reached Bengaluru after 11:30 p.m., turning a journey expected to take approximately two and a half hours into an extended travel ordeal. The account also criticised the onboard catering, stating that the airline offered tea-time snacks rather than dinner despite the late departure.
While the technical fault triggered the disruption, the passenger’s central complaint concerned the airline’s handling of those affected.

Bottom Line
The account described limited explanations, difficulty locating staff and a lack of assistance in the terminal, arguing that better communication could have reduced passengers’ frustration.
Aircraft faults can require inspections, repairs or replacement aircraft, and crew duty-time limits can create further delays when operations fall behind schedule.
However, passengers still depend on airlines for timely updates, practical instructions, and assistance when plans change.
