ATLANTA- Delta Air Lines (DL) has postponed its planned nonstop flights between Atlanta (ATL) and Riyadh (RUH), moving the launch from October 23, 2026, to March 2027.
The airline cited evolving regional developments and safety concerns following attacks on Riyadh’s airport. Delta has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to Saudi Arabia, although it has not confirmed a specific launch date in March.

Delta Delayed Atlanta to Riyadh Flights
Delta announced the postponement on October 12, 2026, saying that passenger and employee safety would continue to guide its operational decisions.
The airline is coordinating with government and aviation partners, including Saudia and Riyadh Air, while monitoring the situation.
The announcement follows a series of deadly attacks on King Khalid International Airport attributed to Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement. The incidents caused casualties, damaged aircraft and disrupted airline operations.
According to OMAAT, the airport was expected to remain closed until October 17 under an aviation notice issued on October 12.
The US Federal Aviation Administration also advised American airlines to exercise caution when operating to or over Saudi Arabia. These developments provide important context for Delta’s decision, although the airline has not detailed every factor behind the postponement.
Original Flight Schedule and Route Details
Delta announced its Atlanta-Riyadh service in October 2025, with tickets going on sale in December 2025. The airline initially planned to launch the route on October 23, 2026, using an Airbus A350-900.
The original schedule included daily flights during the opening week, from October 23 to October 30, followed by three flights per week.
The route would establish Delta’s first nonstop passenger service to Saudi Arabia and make it the only US airline operating nonstop flights to the kingdom. American Airlines and United Airlines serve the Saudi market through codeshare partnerships, according to Reuters.
The delay moves Delta’s planned entry into the market by approximately five months. The airline has not announced a revised day-by-day schedule or confirmed how it will use the aircraft capacity originally allocated to the route.

Delta and Riyadh Air Partnership
Delta’s Saudi Arabian expansion is closely linked to its strategic partnership with Riyadh Air.
In July 2024, the airlines announced an agreement to improve connectivity between North America, Saudi Arabia and destinations beyond. The planned cooperation includes connecting services, codeshare arrangements, loyalty benefits and other customer services, subject to applicable approvals.
Under the announced agreement, Delta would serve as Riyadh Air’s exclusive partner in North America, while Riyadh Air would be Delta’s exclusive partner in Riyadh and beyond.
The partnership gives Delta a potential route to expand its reach across the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent through connecting flights. Riyadh Air, in turn, could benefit from access to Delta’s extensive US network.
The postponement delays the planned introduction of the direct Atlanta-Riyadh link but does not indicate that Delta has abandoned its partnership. The airline has reiterated its commitment to serving Saudi Arabia over the long term.

Route’s Commercial Potential
Beyond security, the route’s long-term performance will depend on passenger demand, fares and connecting traffic.
The original commentary questioned whether initial bookings would justify the service, citing concerns about apparently weak demand despite promotional fares. However, Delta has not released verified booking figures or identified low demand as a reason for the postponement.
Saudi Arabia’s efforts to attract international airlines through financial incentives have also formed part of the wider debate about new routes to Riyadh. Nevertheless, Delta has not disclosed any route-specific subsidies or revenue guarantees in its postponement announcement.
The route’s commercial performance will become clearer after operations begin. For now, security remains the principal concern identified in the airline’s public statement.

What Affected Passengers Should Do
Passengers booked on the affected Atlanta-Riyadh service should visit the My Trips section of Delta’s official website or use the airline’s mobile app to review their options.
Delta has confirmed that affected customers can explore rebooking options and refunds for the unused portion of eligible trips.
Passengers should review the airline’s Riyadh security situation travel waiver for the applicable dates and conditions.
Travellers should rely on Delta’s latest booking information rather than the original October launch schedule.

Will Delta Launch Flights in March 2027?
March 2027 remains Delta’s stated target, but the airline has not confirmed a specific departure date. The final launch will depend on operational decisions and developments in the regional security situation.
The postponement delays a new direct connection between the United States and Saudi Arabia and the wider connectivity benefits expected from the Riyadh Air partnership.
Whether the route begins in March and attracts sufficient passenger demand will become clearer as Delta updates its schedule.
Delta has reaffirmed its long-term interest in Saudi Arabia, but the revised launch remains a plan rather than a guaranteed date.
