FRANKFURT- Lufthansa (LH) will temporarily suspend Airbus A380 operations on two routes from Munich Airport (MUC) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) during the first quarter of 2027. The seasonal adjustment reflects lower transatlantic demand while maintaining service with the Airbus A350-900.
Instead, the German flag carrier will deploy additional Airbus A380 capacity on high demand Asian routes from Munich Airport (MUC) to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM), and continue daily operations to Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL). The changes also come as Lufthansa (LH) continues upgrading its A380 business class cabins.

Lufthansa Shifts Airbus A380 Capacity to Asia
Lufthansa has revised its Airbus A380 schedule for January and February 2027, removing the aircraft from two major California routes while increasing operations across selected Asian destinations.
According to schedule updates reported by AeroRoutes, Lufthansa will withdraw the Airbus A380 from flights between Munich and Los Angeles from January 11 through February 26, 2027. The airline had originally planned to operate six weekly A380 services on the route, with one weekly Airbus A350-900 flight.
Under the revised schedule, the Airbus A350-900 will operate all seven weekly flights between Munich and Los Angeles during this period.
A similar adjustment will take place on the Munich to San Francisco route. From January 16 through February 27, 2027, the Airbus A350-900 will replace the six planned weekly Airbus A380 flights, resulting in daily A350 operations throughout the seasonal period.
These schedule changes are part of Lufthansa’s regular winter planning. January and February traditionally represent the weakest demand period for transatlantic travel, prompting airlines to adjust aircraft deployment to better match passenger demand.
A Lufthansa spokesperson previously noted that schedule adjustments during this period are standard practice because passenger demand is consistently lower during the first two months of the year.

More Airbus A380 Flights to Bangkok and Mumbai
While demand declines on some North American routes during winter, several Asian markets continue to perform strongly for Lufthansa.
The airline will use the Airbus A380 capacity released from its California services to strengthen operations from Munich to Bangkok.
Between January 16 and February 26, 2027, Lufthansa will increase Airbus A380 flights between Munich and Bangkok from one daily service to two daily flights.
The expanded schedule includes:
- LH774 departing Munich at 4:25 PM
- LH772 departing Munich at 10:10 PM
- LH775 departing Bangkok at 10:50 AM
- LH773 departing Bangkok at 11:30 PM
The additional frequencies significantly increase seat availability on one of Lufthansa’s strongest winter leisure and business markets.
India will also receive additional Airbus A380 service during the same period.
From January 11 through February 27, 2027, Lufthansa plans to operate the Airbus A380 on five weekly flights between Munich and Mumbai, replacing the Airbus A350-900 on those services.
The airline has already scheduled daily Airbus A380 operations to Delhi, highlighting the importance of the Indian market during the winter travel season.
The revised deployment demonstrates Lufthansa’s strategy of moving high-capacity aircraft to destinations where seasonal demand remains strong rather than operating oversized aircraft on weaker transatlantic routes.

Airbus A350 Takes Over California Services
Passengers traveling between Munich and California during the A380 suspension will continue flying on one of Lufthansa’s newest long-haul aircraft.
The Airbus A350-900 has become a key part of Lufthansa’s long-haul fleet and offers modern cabins, improved fuel efficiency, lower operating costs, and greater flexibility compared with the larger Airbus A380.
Deploying the A350 allows Lufthansa to maintain daily service while better aligning capacity with expected passenger numbers during the quieter winter months.
This approach helps the airline improve operational efficiency without reducing connectivity between Munich and its West Coast destinations.

Lufthansa Continues A380 Business Class Upgrade
The schedule changes also coincide with Lufthansa’s ongoing Airbus A380 cabin modernization program.
The airline is retrofitting all eight Airbus A380 aircraft with an updated business class featuring direct aisle access for every passenger.
The previous cabin used a 2-2-2 seating configuration with 78 business class seats. The redesigned cabin adopts a 1-2-1 layout, reducing business class capacity to 68 seats while significantly improving passenger comfort and privacy.
The new configuration provides every traveler with direct aisle access, eliminating the need for window seat passengers to step over neighboring passengers during the flight.
Cabin capacity in the remaining classes will remain unchanged:
- First Class: 8 seats
- Business Class: 68 seats after retrofit
- Premium Economy: 52 seats
- Economy Class: 371 seats
Lufthansa completed the first Airbus A380 retrofit earlier this year and expects the modernization of its entire A380 fleet to conclude by mid-2027.
The refurbishment supports the airline’s broader strategy of enhancing its premium product while maintaining the Airbus A380 as an important part of its long haul network.

Seasonal Fleet Strategy Supports Network Demand
Lufthansa’s latest schedule revision illustrates how airlines adapt fleet deployment to seasonal travel patterns.
Rather than operating the Airbus A380 on lower-demand transatlantic services during winter, Lufthansa is redirecting the aircraft to destinations where passenger demand remains consistently high.
The strategy allows the airline to maximize aircraft utilization, improve operational efficiency, and support growing travel demand across Asia while maintaining daily connectivity to California using the Airbus A350-900.
As the airline continues modernizing its Airbus A380 fleet with upgraded premium cabins, these seasonal network adjustments also help position the aircraft on routes where its large capacity and enhanced passenger experience can deliver the greatest commercial value.
