MUNICH- Lufthansa (LH) has expanded paid Business Class seat selection to its retrofitted Airbus A380 fleet, introducing additional charges for selected premium seats on long-haul flights beginning September 15, 2026. The change applies to flights operated from Munich Airport (MUC) using the airline’s upgraded Airbus A380 cabins.
The move extends Lufthansa’s premium seating strategy beyond its Allegris cabins by introducing seat categories with optional fees on refurbished Airbus A380 aircraft. Eligible Miles & More elite members and selected fare types will continue to receive complimentary access to some preferred seats.
Lufthansa Expands Seat Fees to A380 Business Class
Lufthansa is currently modernizing its fleet of eight Airbus A380 aircraft with an upgraded Business Class cabin. Rather than installing its flagship Allegris Business Class product, the airline selected the Thompson Aero Vantage XL seat, a widely used off-the-shelf design already found on several international airlines.
The upgraded cabin features a staggered 1-2-1 configuration, providing every passenger with direct aisle access. Seats alternate between positions closer to the window and positions closer to the aisle, creating naturally different seating experiences despite using the same seat model.
Initially, many travelers welcomed the decision because it avoided the complex seating layouts introduced with Allegris, where multiple seat types carry different pricing. However, Lufthansa has now adopted a similar strategy for the A380 fleet by categorizing seats according to their location and features.
Beginning with flights departing on or after September 15, 2026, passengers booking Business Class on these refurbished Airbus A380s will encounter three seating categories, Travel-Dealz reported.
Three Business Class Seat Categories
Lufthansa has divided the cabin into Classic Seat, Privacy Seat, and Extra Long Bed categories.
Classic Seat
Classic Seats include aisle-side window seats and the paired center seats. Although passengers seated in A and K positions still have window access, they sit farther from the aircraft windows because of the side console.
These seats remain free to select for most Business Class passengers, except those traveling on Business Light fares.
Privacy Seat
Privacy Seats occupy the true window positions where the side console separates passengers from the aisle. These seats offer increased privacy, reduced exposure to cabin traffic, and a closer view outside.
Passengers selecting these seats will pay a surcharge of up to €170 per flight segment.
Miles & More Senator and HON Circle members can reserve Privacy Seats free of charge on eligible fares. However, complimentary selection does not apply to Business Light tickets.
Extra Long Bed
The Extra Long Bed category consists of the bulkhead window seats, including 10A, 10K, 24A, and 24K.
These seats feature a significantly larger footwell and an extended sleeping surface measuring approximately 2.12 to 2.22 meters, making them particularly attractive for taller travelers and passengers prioritizing overnight comfort.
These seats also carry a surcharge of up to €170 per sector.
Only HON Circle members receive complimentary access to these seats on eligible fare types.
New Charges Take Effect in September 2026
The revised seat selection policy applies only to flights departing from September 15, 2026 onward.
Passengers traveling before that date can continue selecting seats without additional charges.
For example, Business Class passengers booking Lufthansa flights between Munich Airport (MUC) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after the implementation date will see a surcharge of up to €170 when selecting either a Privacy Seat or an Extra Long Bed seat.
Airbus A380 Routes Receiving the New Cabin
The refurbished Airbus A380 featuring the upgraded Business Class cabin is currently scheduled on several major long haul routes from Munich.
Current destinations include:
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
- Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai (BOM)
Three Airbus A380 aircraft have already completed the retrofit, while the remaining five aircraft are expected to receive the new cabins by next summer.
Lufthansa Continues Revenue Focus
Lufthansa’s decision reflects a broader industry trend toward monetizing premium seat selection, even within Business Class cabins.
European network airlines have increasingly introduced seat selection fees for premium cabins. British Airways (BA) has charged for Business Class seat assignments for many years, while Air France (AF) and KLM (KL) have recently expanded similar pricing across their long haul networks.
Unlike airlines that charge for nearly every Business Class seat, Lufthansa limits additional fees to seats offering measurable differences in privacy or sleeping comfort. Standard Business Class seats remain available without additional charges on most fare types.
The airline’s approach also differs from its older Airbus A380 configuration. The previous 2-2-2 Business Class layout lacked meaningful seat differentiation, making premium seat pricing difficult to justify.
Passenger Experience Remains Significantly Improved
Despite the introduction of seat selection fees, the upgraded Business Class cabin represents a substantial improvement over Lufthansa’s previous A380 product.
The Thompson Aero Vantage XL seat provides direct aisle access for every passenger, improved privacy, modern storage solutions, and a significantly more competitive onboard experience compared with the airline’s former cabin.
Passengers traveling together also benefit from numerous center-seat pairs, making the cabin more practical for couples than Lufthansa’s Allegris layout, where paired seating is comparatively limited.
While many travelers may question whether a €170 surcharge accurately reflects the additional comfort provided by the Privacy Seat or Extra Long Bed options, the overall cabin remains one of the most significant upgrades introduced to Lufthansa’s Airbus A380 fleet.
