DELHI- India has expanded its electronic visa network by notifying 11 additional international entry points for eligible foreign nationals holding Indian e-Visas.
The latest move adds two airports, Bhopal’s Raja Bhoj Airport (BHO) and Tirupati Airport (TIR), along with nine land ports, giving international travellers greater flexibility when planning trips to the country.
The expansion takes India’s total number of designated e-Visa entry points to 88, covering 37 airports, 38 seaports and 13 land ports.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the wider network is intended to make the e-Visa system more accessible and convenient while supporting efforts to simplify India’s visa regime for legitimate foreign travellers.
New E-Visa Entry Points Announced
The two newly notified airports are Bhopal and Tirupati, expanding e-Visa access to international travellers arriving through Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.
The nine additional land ports extend the facility across several border regions and include both road and rail-linked immigration points.
The newly added land ports are Agartala, Darranga, Gede, Ghojadanga, Haridaspur, Jaigaon, Dawki, Moreh and Attari (Road). Their inclusion gives eligible e-Visa holders more options when entering India through designated land routes.
The latest additions also strengthen connectivity for travellers approaching India from neighbouring countries.
However, an approved e-Visa does not permit entry through every airport, seaport or border crossing, as travellers must use an officially designated e-Visa entry point.
Following the expansion, India’s e-Visa entry network consists of 37 airports, 38 seaports and 13 land ports. This allows eligible foreign nationals to choose between air travel, cruise and maritime routes, or approved land crossings based on their itinerary.
India E-Visa Network Expansion Plans
The e-Visa system was introduced in 2014 with Electronic Travel Authorization for nationals of 43 countries.
According to government information, the facility has since expanded to nationals of 172 countries and now covers 17 sub-categories for different travel purposes.
These categories include tourism, business, medical travel, student travel, mountaineering, transit and other approved purposes.
The facility also supports certain group travellers arriving on cruises, showing that India’s digital visa system extends beyond conventional tourism.
Faster Visa Processing For Travellers
The government says around 95% of e-Visa applications are processed within 72 hours. Processing time can still vary depending on individual applications, documentation and other applicable requirements, so travellers must obtain the necessary approval before travelling.
India has also shifted a large share of its visa processing to electronic channels, with approximately 78% of visas issued by the country now classified as e-Visas, India Today reported.
The government has linked the broader digital system to efforts to streamline legitimate international travel while maintaining immigration and internal-security safeguards.
For the aviation sector, the addition of Bhopal and Tirupati is particularly significant because it widens the number of airports through which eligible foreign visitors can enter India using an e-Visa.
Together with the newly designated land ports and existing seaports, the 88-point network provides travellers with a broader range of approved entry options.
Foreign nationals planning travel to India should therefore verify their eligibility, visa conditions and designated entry point before departure.
