IRKUTSK— Russia’s effort to develop a domestically built competitor to the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo reached a significant milestone after the first serial production Yakovlev MC-21-310 successfully completed its maiden test flight.
The aircraft departed from Irkutsk Northwest Airport (UIR) and remained airborne for 83 minutes, marking a major step toward commercial certification and future airline deliveries.
The latest MC-21-310 reflects Russia’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on Western aerospace technology following international sanctions.
Unlike the earlier MC-21-300 variant, which used Pratt & Whitney engines, the production-standard aircraft is powered by Russian-built Aviadvigatel PD-14 engines and incorporates a growing number of domestically manufactured systems.
The aircraft is expected to serve airlines including Aeroflot (SU) as Russia seeks to modernize its narrowbody fleet.

Russia’s MC-21 First Test Flight Milestone
The serial production MC-21-310 departed from the Irkutsk Aviation Plant and completed all planned flight objectives during its first test mission.
The aircraft climbed to approximately 19,700 feet while reaching a speed of around 600 km/h before returning safely after one hour and 23 minutes.
According to United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), the successful flight validated the aircraft’s performance and confirmed the readiness of the production-standard airframe.
Test pilot Roman Taskayev stated that the aircraft performed as expected and completed its flight program without issues.
The achievement also demonstrates progress in transitioning the MC-21 program from prototype testing to serial manufacturing, an important requirement before commercial deliveries can begin.

Domestic Production Push Accelerates
The MC-21 program began in 2009 under the Irkut brand and was initially developed with substantial Western technology. Its original MC-21-300 variant received Russian certification in late 2021 using Pratt & Whitney PW1000G engines.
However, sanctions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine forced Yakovlev to redesign the aircraft with locally produced components.
The resulting MC-21-310 now features PD-14 engines alongside Russian-built avionics, systems, and other critical equipment intended to replace imported technologies.
Certification of the updated aircraft has taken longer than originally planned, but the successful production flight represents another milestone toward regulatory approval.
Industry reports indicate that continued flight testing should help shorten the gap between certification and airline deliveries.

Orders And Outlook Momentum
UAC is preparing an initial production batch of 18 aircraft at its Irkutsk manufacturing facility. These aircraft are expected to be delivered primarily to Aeroflot under existing agreements once certification is completed.
The MC-21 program has accumulated 384 firm orders, with Aeroflot accounting for 198 aircraft. Rossiya has ordered 61 aircraft, while Red Wings Airlines plans to receive 16 units and IrAero has committed to 10. Another 99 aircraft remain allocated to undisclosed customers.
The narrowbody aircraft is designed to compete directly with the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo families in the medium-haul market, Simple Flying reported.
Although the program has experienced years of delays, the first flight of the serial production MC-21-310 signals that Russia’s flagship commercial aircraft project is moving closer to entering airline service.
