MUMBAI— A Kerala consumer has won a nearly nine-year legal battle against Air India (AI), securing compensation of approximately ₹1.36 lakh after a delayed international flight disrupted his journey to Saudi Arabia and left him stranded overnight at Mumbai Airport (BOM).
The ruling reinforces the responsibility of airlines to provide adequate assistance when operational disruptions significantly affect passengers.
The case dates back to 2017 when the passenger was scheduled to travel from Kochi International Airport (COK) to Dammam via Mumbai on Air India.
According to the consumer complaint, the airline’s delayed domestic connection caused him to miss his onward international flight, forcing him to remain at Mumbai Airport overnight before continuing his journey the following day.
The prolonged disruption resulted in financial losses, inconvenience, and mental distress.

Air India Ordered to Pay ₹1.36 Lakh
The passenger argued that Air India failed to provide timely assistance despite the significant delay. He claimed the disruption caused additional expenses, loss of valuable time, and unnecessary hardship during an international journey.
After repeated attempts to resolve the matter directly with the airline, he approached the consumer commission, alleging deficiency in service. The legal proceedings continued for almost nine years before the commission delivered its final order in his favor.
The consumer commission found that the airline had failed to fulfill its obligation toward the passenger after the delayed flight disrupted his itinerary. It ruled that the airline’s handling of the situation amounted to inadequate service under consumer protection laws.
The commission directed Air India to compensate the passenger with a total award of about ₹1.36 lakh.
The amount includes reimbursement for financial losses, compensation for mental agony, and litigation-related costs, reflecting both the inconvenience suffered and the prolonged legal process.

Consumer Court Ruling Against Air India
The ruling highlights that airlines are expected to assist passengers when delays occur within their control, particularly when those delays affect connecting international flights.
Consumer forums in India have consistently held that carriers must provide reasonable care and support instead of leaving passengers to bear the consequences alone.
In this case, the commission observed that the passenger had to spend an unplanned night at Mumbai Airport after missing his international connection. The disruption also affected his travel schedule and created avoidable expenses that the airline failed to address satisfactorily.
The decision serves as another reminder that passengers can seek legal remedies when airlines fail to meet their obligations during major operational disruptions.
While compensation cases often take years to conclude, consumer commissions continue to uphold passenger rights when sufficient evidence supports claims of service deficiency.

Passenger Rights Matter in Aviation
The judgment underscores the importance of preserving travel records, boarding passes, tickets, receipts, and communication with airlines whenever flight disruptions occur. Such documents frequently become crucial evidence in consumer disputes.
Although the incident occurred several years ago, the final verdict demonstrates that passengers can still obtain relief through the legal system when airlines fail to provide appropriate assistance or compensation.
The case also reinforces growing awareness of consumer rights in India’s aviation sector, where accountability for delayed and disrupted journeys remains an important issue for both airlines and travelers, On Manorama reported.
For airlines, the ruling highlights the need for effective disruption management and prompt passenger support. For travelers, it serves as a reminder that consumer protection mechanisms remain available when airline service falls short of expected standards
