LONDON— A British Airways (BA) flight carrying around 180 passengers narrowly avoided a serious accident during its approach to London Heathrow Airport (LHR), according to reports that have prompted a formal safety investigation.
The Airbus A320, operating as Flight BA919 from Düsseldorf Airport (DUS), encountered a critical situation while descending toward one of Europe’s busiest airports.
The incident reportedly occurred on July 6 as the aircraft approached Heathrow after a routine flight from Germany.
Although the jet landed safely without injuries, aviation authorities are now examining the sequence of events after the aircraft experienced stall warnings and a temporary loss of control during the approach.

Heathrow Approach Incident
The aircraft reportedly suffered an Air Data Reference (ADR) system failure while descending toward Heathrow.
The malfunction caused the Airbus A320 to revert from its normal flight control mode to Alternate Law, reducing several automated flight protection features available to the crew.
The initial failure triggered a stall warning, prompting the pilots to discontinue their first landing attempt and enter a holding pattern.
During a subsequent approach, another stall warning occurred at approximately 3,000 feet, requiring immediate corrective action to recover the aircraft before continuing the landing.
Reports indicate the aircraft briefly descended several hundred feet during the recovery. Despite the challenging circumstances, the flight crew stabilized the aircraft and completed a safe landing at Heathrow without further complications.

Formal Safety Investigation
The UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has opened a formal investigation into the serious incident. Preliminary information classifies the occurrence as a loss of control during flight, although investigators have not yet released their final findings.
According to available reports, investigators are examining the interaction between the ADR system failure and the crew’s response during the approach.
Aviation safety specialists will analyze flight recorder and cockpit voice recorder data to determine the exact sequence of events and identify any operational or technical factors involved.
British Airways confirmed that safety remains its highest priority and is cooperating fully with the investigation. The airline has not publicly commented on the preliminary reports beyond acknowledging the ongoing inquiry.

Flight Safety Lessons
Modern Airbus aircraft are designed with multiple layers of redundancy, allowing crews to safely manage technical malfunctions through established procedures.
However, when certain flight control protections become unavailable, pilots must rely more heavily on manual aircraft handling and standard recovery techniques.
The incident has attracted attention within the aviation industry because it occurred during the approach phase, one of the most demanding portions of any flight
Aviation experts note that flight crews receive extensive simulator training to manage failures involving flight control systems and stall warnings under various operating conditions.
The AAIB’s final report is expected to provide a detailed explanation of the technical failure, crew actions, and any safety recommendations aimed at preventing similar events in the future.
Until that report is released, the investigation remains focused on improving aviation safety rather than assigning blame.
