GERMANY– Lufthansa Group (LH) has welcomed the decision by the Federal Republic of Germany to remove airport transit visa requirements for Indian nationals traveling to third countries through German airports.
The new policy took effect on June 3, 2026, and is expected to make international journeys significantly easier for Indian travelers using Germany as a transit hub.
The announcement, issued by the German Embassy in New Delhi, is expected to benefit passengers connecting through major airports, including Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich Airport (MUC).
Lufthansa Group, which currently operates more than 70 weekly flights between India and Europe, said the move will strengthen connectivity between India and Germany while improving access to destinations across Europe and beyond.

Lufthansa Welcomes Germany Transit Visa-Free
The abolition of airport transit visa requirements removes a long-standing procedural hurdle for Indian travelers connecting through German airports to onward destinations. Passengers traveling to countries outside Germany can now transit through German hubs without obtaining a separate airport transit visa, provided they meet all applicable travel requirements for their final destination.
The policy is expected to improve the passenger experience by reducing paperwork, shortening travel preparation times, and simplifying international itineraries. Industry observers also view the change as a positive step toward strengthening aviation and economic ties between India and Germany.
For Lufthansa Group, the decision comes at a time when demand for travel between India and Europe continues to grow. India remains the airline group’s largest intercontinental market in the Asia-Pacific region and plays a critical role in its global network strategy.

Lufthansa Expands India Network and Premium Services
As Lufthansa Group marks its 100th anniversary in 2026, the company continues to invest heavily in the Indian market. The airline group has maintained a presence in India for more than six decades and is expanding capacity and premium offerings across several routes.
Among the key developments is the deployment of Lufthansa’s Allegris cabin product on additional Boeing 787-9 services from Delhi (DEL) and Hyderabad (HYD). The carrier is also introducing FOX, or Future Onboard Experience, across its long-haul fleet, bringing upgraded cabin features focused on comfort, personalization, and premium travel experiences.
Meanwhile, SWISS (LX) plans to launch its first-ever nonstop service between Bengaluru (BLR) and Zurich (ZRH) during the Winter 2026 schedule. The airline will also increase capacity with additional Airbus A330 flights between Delhi and Zurich.
Lufthansa is further boosting services by expanding Airbus A380 operations between Mumbai (BOM) and Munich, responding to strong demand from both business and leisure travelers.

India Aviation Market Growth and Rising Global Connectivity Demand
The latest visa policy change aligns with Lufthansa Group’s broader growth strategy in India. The airline group believes easier transit procedures will encourage more travelers to choose German airports as gateways to Europe, North America, and other international destinations.
With more than 135 million passengers carried globally in 2025 and revenue reaching €39.6 billion, Lufthansa Group remains one of the world’s largest aviation companies. The combination of expanded flight capacity, premium cabin investments, and simplified transit procedures is expected to further strengthen its position in the rapidly growing Indian aviation market.
The visa-free airport transit policy is also likely to enhance Germany’s role as a major global aviation hub while offering Indian travelers more convenient access to destinations worldwide through Lufthansa Group’s extensive network.
