GLASGOW— Glasgow Airport (GLA) has welcomed the inaugural Edelweiss (WK) service from Zurich Airport (ZRH), marking the launch of a new direct route connecting Scotland and Switzerland for the summer travel season.
The first flight arrived in Glasgow on Friday, officially opening a twice-weekly service that will operate every Monday and Friday until September 14.
Airport officials believe the new connection will improve travel options for both leisure and business passengers while supporting tourism growth in both countries.

New Zurich Route from Scotland
The new service provides travelers in Scotland with a direct link to Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city and one of Europe’s most important aviation hubs.
The route also expands connectivity within the wider Lufthansa Group network, offering passengers access to additional destinations through Zurich, The National flagged.
Airport executives described the launch as an important addition to Glasgow’s international route portfolio.
The service strengthens links between Scotland and continental Europe at a time when airlines continue to rebuild and expand their networks following several years of industry disruption.
The twice-weekly operation is expected to attract a mix of travelers, including tourists, business passengers, and visitors seeking convenient access to onward connections through Switzerland.

Tourism Benefits for Switzerland and Scotland
Zurich remains one of Switzerland’s most visited cities thanks to its combination of historic architecture, cultural attractions, and scenic landscapes.
Located on the shores of Lake Zurich, the city offers visitors access to a well-preserved Old Town, renowned museums, and numerous dining and shopping districts.
The city also serves as a gateway to the Swiss Alps, making it a popular starting point for travelers heading to mountain resorts and outdoor destinations.
Zurich Airport’s proximity to the city center further enhances its appeal, with travelers able to reach downtown Zurich within minutes of arrival.
For Scottish travelers, the new route creates additional options for short city breaks, extended holidays, and multi-destination European itineraries. Direct flights eliminate the need for connecting services, reducing travel times and improving convenience.
The route is also expected to encourage more Swiss visitors to explore Scotland, supporting local tourism businesses and visitor attractions.

Edelweiss Connectivity Expansion
Glasgow Airport officials view the route launch as part of a broader strategy to strengthen international connectivity.
Enhanced links to major European hubs can help increase passenger choice while supporting economic and tourism development across the region.
According to airport management, Zurich’s role as a major European gateway makes the route particularly valuable.
Beyond serving point-to-point demand, the connection offers access to a wider network of destinations across Europe and beyond.
The arrival of Edelweiss also reinforces the airport’s relationship with the Lufthansa Group, one of Europe’s largest airline groups.
Industry observers note that such partnerships play an important role in maintaining international connectivity and attracting additional airline investment.
As the summer travel season progresses, airport officials will closely monitor demand levels and passenger performance.
A successful launch could strengthen the case for future seasonal or expanded services between Scotland and Switzerland.
