LUXEMBOURG- SES and Japan Airlines (JL) have announced a major expansion of inflight connectivity solutions for long-haul aircraft, marking a significant step in onboard digital transformation.
The agreement will introduce advanced multi-orbit satellite connectivity across key international routes, enhancing passenger experience with faster and more reliable internet services.
Japan Airlines, based in Tokyo, continues to strengthen its position as a leader in inflight connectivity by integrating next-generation systems into its widebody fleet.
The partnership with SES reflects the airline’s long-term strategy to improve onboard services while maintaining operational efficiency across its global network.

Japan Airlines, SES In-Flight Connectivity
Under the new agreement, Japan Airlines will install SES’s multi-orbit electronically steered antenna systems on a total of 41 aircraft. This includes 20 Airbus A350-900 aircraft and 10 Boeing 787-9 aircraft as linefit installations, along with 11 Boeing 787-9 aircraft through retrofit programs.
The rollout will begin in 2028 for linefit aircraft, while retrofit schedules will follow based on fleet availability.
This phased implementation ensures minimal operational disruption while accelerating the airline’s connectivity upgrades. The move reflects a broader trend among global carriers investing in high-speed onboard internet.

SES is a Multi-Orbit Technology
The SES system uses electronically steered antennas designed to operate across multiple satellite orbits.
This includes geostationary satellites and Low Earth Orbit constellations, enabling wider coverage and reduced latency for passengers.
The technology offers consistent performance even on long-haul routes over oceans and remote regions.
It also allows seamless switching between satellite networks, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity. These capabilities position Japan Airlines to deliver a more competitive and modern inflight experience.
Passengers can expect faster browsing speeds, stable connections, and improved access to streaming and communication services.
The system’s low-profile antenna design also supports aerodynamic efficiency, helping airlines maintain fuel performance.

Japan’s Passenger Experience Focus
Japan Airlines continues to invest in onboard digital services as part of its customer experience strategy. The airline has already introduced free inflight connectivity on domestic routes, setting a benchmark in passenger service innovation.
The expansion to long-haul aircraft builds on this foundation, targeting international travelers who demand reliable connectivity throughout their journey. The airline aims to meet evolving passenger expectations while strengthening brand loyalty.
SES and Japan Airlines have maintained a partnership for over a decade, supporting continuous upgrades in inflight technology. This latest agreement reinforces that collaboration while aligning with broader industry shifts toward connected aircraft ecosystems.
As satellite networks expand, airlines can enhance performance without major hardware changes, making this investment both strategic and future-ready.
