MADRID- Iberia (IB) has launched its first direct service between Madrid (MAD) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), marking a significant step in the airline’s North American expansion.
The route, operated with the Airbus A321XLR, adds a third daily flight to the New York metropolitan area alongside its existing services to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
The new Newark service is designed primarily for corporate travelers, offering direct access to Manhattan’s financial district from Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD).
With this addition, Iberia now serves two New York-area airports, giving passengers more flexibility and a total of three daily departures to one of its most important markets in the United States.

Iberia Starts Newark Liberty Flights with A321XLR
The inaugural flight departed Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) at 19:35 and landed at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) at 22:25 local time.
The service is operated using the Airbus A321XLR, an aircraft that Iberia was the first airline in the world to fly commercially. The carrier currently operates seven units of this model.
The A321XLR features the Airspace cabin, which includes larger overhead storage compartments, LED lighting, and an improved sense of space throughout the aircraft. The cabin is configured in two classes, Business and Economy, with a total of 182 seats.
The aircraft’s extended range makes it well-suited for transatlantic operations, and Iberia has positioned it as a core part of its long-haul growth strategy.
With Newark added to its schedule, Iberia now operates two daily flights to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and one to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). This three-frequency setup gives customers the ability to choose the airport that best fits their travel plans, particularly relevant for those heading to different parts of the New York metropolitan area.

Corporate Focus Behind the Newark Route Choice
The Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) service holds particular importance for business travelers. Its location provides faster and more direct access to Manhattan’s financial district compared to JFK, making it a practical choice for short business trips where time is a priority.
New York ranks as Iberia’s (IB) top corporate market in the United States. The airline’s decision to add Newark reflects the demand from business passengers who require efficient connections between Madrid (MAD) and one of the world’s leading financial centers.
María Jesús López Solás, Iberia’s Chief Commercial Officer for Network Development and Alliances, noted that the route strengthens the airline’s offer for corporate customers while also broadening its overall New York capacity.

Record Summer Capacity Between Madrid and New York
The launch of the Newark route coincides with Iberia’s summer 2025 schedule, during which the airline has deployed record capacity on the Madrid (MAD) to New York corridor.
For this season, Iberia has made available 352,055 seats across its New York routes, representing a 43% increase compared to the same period last year.
This growth serves both business and leisure travelers and reinforces the airline’s commitment to keeping Madrid well-connected to one of the busiest transatlantic markets. The summer season officially started on 29 March.

Iberia’s Broader US and Canada Expansion Under Flight Plan 2030
Beyond New York, Iberia has built its largest-ever schedule for the United States and Canada during the current summer season.
The airline will offer 1,280,254 seats across both markets, a 19.02% increase over the previous summer. Weekly flight frequencies have grown from 144 to 166, a rise of approximately 15%.
This expansion is driven by the airline’s Flight Plan 2030 strategy, which focuses on adding new destinations and increasing capacity through the acquisition of modern aircraft. Iberia has received six new Airbus A321XLR jets in recent months, each contributing to its ability to serve more routes across the Atlantic.
Key additions under this expansion include the launch of a new service to Toronto, the Newark daily flight, and the first complete summer of operations to Orlando. Together, these routes strengthen Iberia’s position in North America and reflect its long-term focus on the region as a central pillar of its long-haul network.
