HELSINKI- Finnair (AY) has announced a major fleet renewal strategy centered on efficiency and growth, with new aircraft orders and acquisitions aimed at strengthening its regional and European operations. The airline confirmed agreements with Embraer and additional plans to source aircraft from the secondary market.
The dual approach combines firm orders for next-generation jets and the acquisition of used Airbus aircraft, reflecting a balanced strategy to optimize costs and expand capacity. This move positions Finnair to enhance connectivity while improving sustainability across its network.

Finnair Embraer E195-E2 Order
Finnair has signed an agreement with Embraer for up to 46 E195-E2 aircraft. This includes 18 firm orders, 16 options, and 12 purchase rights, making it one of the most significant investments in the airline’s history.
The airline will configure these aircraft with 134 seats, focusing on passenger comfort and operational efficiency.
Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027 and will continue in phases over the following years.
The E195-E2 aircraft will replace older regional jets currently in operation. These new jets offer improved reliability and reduced environmental impact, aligning with Finnair’s long-term strategy.

Finnair’s Aircraft Strategy
Alongside new aircraft orders, Finnair plans to acquire up to 12 Airbus A320 and A321ceo aircraft from the used aircraft market. These aircraft will replace aging A319s and A320s in the fleet.
This combination of new and pre-owned aircraft allows Finnair to maintain flexibility in its fleet planning. It also helps manage capital expenditure while supporting growth in key markets.
The airline has also secured agreements with Pratt & Whitney for spare engines and maintenance support. These engines will power the E195-E2 fleet, ensuring consistent performance and operational reliability.
Finnair plans to deploy the new Embraer jets through its regional partner Norra. This will strengthen feeder traffic to long-haul routes and improve overall network connectivity.

Efficiency Gains for Finnair
The Embraer E195-E2 offers significant efficiency improvements compared to earlier models. It delivers over 30 percent better fuel efficiency per seat and reduces noise emissions, making it one of the most advanced aircraft in its category.
Passengers will benefit from a quieter cabin, modern seating, and onboard connectivity features. The aircraft design eliminates middle seats, enhancing comfort on short-haul routes.
The fleet renewal also supports Finnair’s climate targets by reducing carbon emissions. Lower fuel consumption directly contributes to improved environmental performance.
The addition of Airbus A320 and A321ceos further enhances operational flexibility. Larger aircraft can serve high-demand routes, while smaller jets can operate efficiently on regional sectors.
