ABU DHABI- Etihad Airways (EY) has been ranked the World’s Safest Airline for 2026 by AirlineRatings.com after evaluation of 320 global carriers.
The ranking highlights Etihad’s strong safety performance, modern fleet, and low incident rate, setting a new milestone for Gulf carriers.

How Airline Safety Rankings Determine 2026 Leaders
AirlineRatings.com evaluates airlines annually using safety and operational indicators, including incident rates relative to flight volume, fleet age, pilot training, serious incidents, and compliance with international aviation audits.
For 2026, additional weight was placed on turbulence prevention and management, as turbulence remains the leading cause of in-flight passenger and crew injuries. Airlines participating in the IATA Turbulence Aware program or equivalent data-sharing initiatives scored better due to improved risk forecasting and response.
Transparency in safety reporting and participation in independent onboard safety audits also influenced rankings. Analysts emphasized that safety differences among leading airlines remain extremely narrow.
Less than four points separated positions one through fourteen, and only 1.3 points separated the top six airlines. Experts caution that ranking differences should not be interpreted as major safety gaps.

Why Etihad Airways Ranked No.1?
Etihad secured the top ranking due to measurable operational performance indicators:
- One of the youngest fleets in global aviation
- Advanced cockpit systems focused on turbulence avoidance
- Crash-free operational history
- Lowest incident rate per flight among evaluated airlines
- Strong compliance with cabin and cockpit safety practices
- Participation in independent onboard safety audits
- Effective turbulence management procedures
Etihad’s CEO Antonoaldo Neves stated the recognition reflects the airline’s safety culture, strong regulatory oversight in the UAE, and industry collaboration where airlines share best practices to continually raise safety standards.
We are incredibly proud to receive one of the most respected airline safety awards in the world from AirlineRatings, an independent, globally recognised organisation. As the first Gulf carrier to achieve this position, it reflects the strength of our safety culture, the dedication of our people, and the aviation excellence of our region. This recognition is a reminder that safety is never achieved in isolation. Across aviation, airlines continuously share best practices and learn from experience, supported by a strong regulatory environment that sets demanding standards and pushes the bar higher. In the UAE, this regulatory framework challenges us to meet the highest levels of safety and operational excellence every day.”
Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Etihad Airways
This achievement marks the first time a Gulf carrier has led the global full-service safety rankings

Understanding Incident Rates in Modern Aviation
All airlines in the rankings recorded minor incidents over recent years, ranging from tail strikes to engine shutdowns or onboard technical events. However, incident rates per flight remain extremely low, ranging between 0.002 and 0.09 per flight across ranked carriers.
Industry experts highlight that modern airline safety is defined not only by aircraft quality but also by consistent training, operational discipline, transparency, and risk management across millions of annual flights.
Inclusion in the Top 25 now reflects sustained operational excellence rather than isolated performance metrics.
