ABU DHABI- Etihad Airways (EY) is facing criticism after a physician alleged that a cabin manager prevented her from assisting a passenger during a medical emergency on Flight EY16.
The flight operated from Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) to an unspecified destination, according to the account. The physician said another female doctor was also prevented from helping while the cabin crew continued to follow what they described as protocol.

Etihad Flight EY16 Faces Medical Emergency Complaint
A physician identified as Gretchen Winter, MD, said on August 27, 2026, that she witnessed a medical emergency near her seat aboard Etihad Airways (EY) Flight EY16.
Winter said she identified herself to the cabin crew and asked for the medical bag after noticing the emergency. According to her account, the male cabin manager told her to return to her seat because he was first-aid trained and did not need her assistance.
She alleged that the cabin manager instructed passengers to provide the affected passenger with oxygen. Winter argued that oxygen was not the appropriate response to the situation she observed, although the specific medical condition of the passenger was not disclosed.
Physician Says She Was Turned Away
Winter said she again explained her medical qualifications and asked to assist the passenger. She alleged that the cabin manager again instructed her to return to her seat.
According to her account, nearby passengers attempted to keep her involved and asked her to help. However, she said she was ultimately prevented from assisting and had to observe the response from her seat.
The physician described herself as a quadruple board-certified doctor. She also said another female physician on the flight was similarly turned away when she attempted to help.

Passenger Reportedly Remained on Floor
Winter claimed that 10 to 15 minutes after the initial incident, the passenger remained on the floor in another aisle.
She said a flight attendant later apologized and told her that the cabin manager was following protocol. Winter questioned why the crew could not continue following its procedures while allowing a qualified physician to assess the passenger.
The account does not provide the passenger’s medical diagnosis or explain the eventual outcome of the emergency.

Cabin Manager Defended Protocol
Winter said the cabin manager approached her about an hour later and explained that he had been following protocol. According to the physician, he said he would have called her if her assistance had been required.
Winter told him that she believed the passenger had been triaged incorrectly and that his interaction with her had been disrespectful. She said the cabin manager continued to defend his actions on the basis of protocol.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and the account does not include Etihad Airways’ response to the incident.

Physician Questions Crew’s Handling of Emergency
Winter questioned whether the incident reflected sexism or poor judgment, arguing that her medical credentials should have been considered when the crew assessed the situation.
Airlines maintain procedures for handling onboard medical emergencies, including deciding when and how passengers with medical expertise can assist. Cabin crew also have defined responsibilities for coordinating medical responses and using onboard emergency equipment.
The incident highlights the tension that can arise when medically qualified passengers offer assistance during an inflight emergency. The cabin crew remains responsible for managing the situation, but access to qualified medical volunteers can become an important consideration depending on the circumstances.

Complaint Followed by Separate Meal Issue
Winter also criticized Etihad for a separate issue later in the flight. She said the airline served her a meal that was frozen solid.
The physician said she was too frustrated by the earlier incident to raise another complaint and ate only a roll from the meal.
Her post, published on X on August 27, attracted significant attention, with the original post recording more than 2.1 million views according to the information provided.
The central allegations concern the handling of the medical emergency and the cabin manager’s decision not to accept assistance from two physicians. Etihad Airways has not responded to the supplied material, so the airline’s explanation and the applicable onboard medical protocol remain unclear.
