MONTREAL— Air Transat (TS) has launched its first-ever non-stop flights to Rio de Janeiro, marking a significant expansion of its South American network. The inaugural services departed from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) on February 4 and Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) on February 5, establishing new direct links to Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International Airport (GIG).
The new routes position Air Transat as the only airline offering a direct connection between Montreal and Rio de Janeiro, while also strengthening nonstop access from Toronto. These launches reflect growing demand for leisure and visiting-friends-and-relatives travel between Canada and Brazil, one of South America’s most dynamic aviation markets.

Air Transat’s New Route Operations
Air Transat will operate the Toronto–Rio de Janeiro service twice weekly, with departures scheduled on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
This route will remain available until June 10, 2026, targeting peak winter and shoulder-season travel demand.
The Montreal–Rio de Janeiro route will operate once weekly on Thursdays and will run until June 4, 2026. As the only nonstop option on this city pair, the service offers travelers in Quebec a direct alternative to connecting itineraries through the United States or Europe.
Both routes are operated using the Airbus A330 widebody aircraft. The deployment of the A330 provides higher seat capacity, long-haul comfort, and operational efficiency suited to transcontinental leisure routes.

Market Demand
According to Canada Aviation News, Travel between Canada and Rio de Janeiro has shown steady growth, with approximately 44,000 passengers traveling annually between the two markets.
Nearly half of this demand originates from the Greater Toronto Area, highlighting the commercial viability of a direct Toronto service.
For Montreal, the route fills a long-standing connectivity gap between Quebec and Brazil. The nonstop link is expected to stimulate leisure travel, strengthen cultural exchange, and support family connections between the two regions.
Airport authorities in both Toronto and Montreal view the new services as strategic additions to their long-haul networks.
The routes also enhance Canada’s overall air connectivity to South America, a region that has seen limited nonstop options compared to Europe and Asia.

Air Transat’s Network Connectivity
Air Transat’s entry into Rio de Janeiro also enables onward travel opportunities through its interline partnership with GOL Airlines.
From Galeão Airport, passengers can connect seamlessly to multiple domestic and regional destinations across Brazil and South America.
Key onward cities include São Paulo, Porto Alegre, Recife, Salvador, and Belo Horizonte. This connectivity expands the practical reach of the new routes beyond Rio, making the services attractive to both leisure travelers and those visiting secondary markets.
With these additions, Air Transat continues to position itself as a leading leisure carrier linking Canada to high-demand international destinations.
The Rio de Janeiro launch underscores the airline’s strategy of combining exclusive routes, widebody aircraft, and strategic partnerships to grow its long-Air Transat Launches Nonstop Toronto and Montreal Flights to Rio de Janeiro
