FRANKFURT- Lufthansa (LH) has started a major Airbus A380 cabin retrofit program, upgrading Business Class seats across its largest aircraft. The first retrofit begins in Dresden (DRS) with service entry planned from Munich (MUC).
Lufthansa will install new Thompson Business Class seats on all Airbus A380 aircraft, offering direct aisle access and improved privacy. The program runs through mid 2027 and covers the airline’s full A380 fleet.

Lufthansa A380 New Business Seats
Lufthansa is executing the largest fleet renewal and cabin modernization program in its history. Alongside new aircraft deliveries, the airline is upgrading cabins on in-service long-haul aircraft, including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8.
The Airbus A380 retrofit work starts at Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden. The first upgraded aircraft is scheduled to return to Munich and enter commercial service in April. All eight Lufthansa A380 aircraft are expected to complete retrofit by mid 2027.
During each retrofit visit, the aircraft also undergoes scheduled technical maintenance and checks. This approach reduces downtime and improves fleet planning efficiency.

New Business Class Seat Specifications
The upgraded A380 Business Class will use Thompson Aero Vantage XL seats. These are certified, off-the-shelf premium seats already in airline service, which removes the need for a long certification cycle.
Each Business Class seat will include:
- Direct aisle access for every passenger
- Seat width of about 58 cm
- The bed length is at least 2 meters
- Bluetooth audio connectivity
- Adjustable privacy partitions
The new layout reduces Business Class capacity from 78 seats to 68 seats. The change improves personal space and privacy while aligning the product with current market expectations.

Full A380 Cabin Configuration After Retrofit
After modernization, Lufthansa’s Airbus A380 will have the following layout:
- 8 First Class seats
- 68 Business Class seats
- 52 Premium Economy seats
- 371 Economy Class seats
This keeps the A380 as the highest capacity aircraft in Lufthansa’s long-haul fleet while improving premium cabin quality.
Why Allegris Cabins Are Not Installed on the A380
Lufthansa’s newest Allegris cabin products have debuted on newly delivered Airbus A350-900 and Boeing 787-9 aircraft. However, the A380 retrofit does not include Allegris seats.
One reason is certification risk and delay. The Allegris Business Class seat program has faced approval challenges, which led to delivery aircraft flying with blocked seats. Using a pre-certified Thompson seat allows Lufthansa to deploy the new A380 cabin quickly and reliably.
Another factor is aircraft structure. The A380 upper deck has different spatial constraints compared to newer aircraft types. Installing Allegris seats there would likely require additional customization and engineering effort.
By selecting a proven certified seat, Lufthansa avoids program delays and brings an upgraded Business Class product to market faster.

Fleet Modernization Beyond the A380
Lufthansa is also upgrading other long-haul aircraft types. The Boeing 747-8 is being reconfigured in phases, with new generation seats introduced on selected decks first. New deliveries of A350-900 and 787-9 aircraft continue with Allegris cabins installed from factory production.
This mixed approach allows Lufthansa to modernize cabins across the fleet while managing certification timelines and operational risk.
