Islamabad has emerged as the center of renewed optimism for Pakistan International Airlines as the national carrier prepares to restore direct flights to London after a prolonged suspension. Pakistan International Airlines (PK), commonly known as PIA, has announced plans to resume London operations from March 2026, marking a significant milestone in its international recovery strategy.
The proposed services will connect Islamabad and other key Pakistani gateways with London Heathrow Airport (LHR). The move follows the easing of UK aviation restrictions and signals a gradual normalization of long-haul operations for the airline after several years of regulatory and operational challenges.

Pakistan Airlines to Resume London Flights
According to Islamabad Post, PIA has secured approval for four weekly flight slots at London Heathrow, one of the world’s busiest and most constrained airports.
These slots were temporarily allocated to another foreign carrier during PIA’s suspension to prevent them from being permanently withdrawn.
With regulatory conditions improving, the airline has formally notified Heathrow authorities of its intent to restart services in March 2026. Officials describe the step as a critical part of restoring PIA’s footprint in one of its most important international markets.
UK operations had resumed partially in October after British authorities lifted a five-year ban earlier this year. The London route, however, remained inactive until now, despite strong demand from the Pakistani diaspora and business travelers.

Slot And Network Plans
The London Heathrow slots are expected to anchor PIA’s broader UK expansion strategy.
Direct London flights historically served as a high-yield route for the airline, supporting both passenger traffic and cargo movement.
Aviation analysts note that resuming Heathrow operations provides reputational value as well as commercial opportunity. Heathrow access also improves connectivity for onward travel within Europe and North America.
PIA has not yet disclosed detailed schedules or aircraft types for the London route. However, the carrier is expected to deploy widebody aircraft once operational approvals and fleet availability align.

Ownership And Investment
The announcement comes amid major structural changes at PIA following its partial privatization. A consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation has emerged as the winning bidder for a 75 percent stake in the airline, with a bid valued at 135 billion Pakistani rupees.
The consortium has confirmed that Fauji Fertiliser Company Limited has joined as a strategic partner. Both entities are expected to play active roles in management and operational oversight once regulatory approvals are completed.
The new owners have pledged significant investment, including 125 billion rupees in the first year to improve ground operations, service quality, and fleet utilization.
Plans also include expanding the number of operational aircraft from 18 to 62, a move aimed at restoring network depth and reliability.

Bottom Line
PIA’s planned return to London from March 2026 reflects both regulatory progress and renewed investor confidence.
If executed as planned, the Heathrow services could become a cornerstone of the airline’s international revival while supporting broader reforms under new ownership.
