BERLIN— Germany’s parliament has approved a major round of defense procurements worth over €7 billion ($8.14 billion), with the acquisition of new Eurofighter combat jets taking center stage.
The deal, announced in the German capital, allocates roughly €3.75 billion ($4.36 billion) for 20 new tranche-five Eurofighters, set for delivery between 2031 and 2034.

Germany Approves Eurofighter Deal
The tranche-five Eurofighters will be a significant upgrade for the Luftwaffe. The new models will improve electronic attack and suppression of enemy air defenses, vital for modern warfare operations.
Lawmakers also approved an additional €1.13 billion package to enhance the current Eurofighter fleet with advanced electronic warfare systems by 2033.
Germany’s defense ministry confirmed that €412 million will go toward new maintenance parts and upgraded simulators to support pilot training and sustainment.
These upgrades aim to keep the Eurofighter fleet operational and efficient for the next decade.

Funded Through the Regular Budget
Unlike several recent defense procurements, the latest Eurofighter purchase will be financed through Germany’s regular defense budget. It will not draw from the €100 billion special military fund created after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
The decision signals a shift toward integrating long-term defense spending into the country’s standard fiscal planning rather than relying solely on emergency funds.
Since January, the parliamentary Budget Committee has approved 25 major military projects, underlining Germany’s renewed commitment to defense expansion.
Officials have said the country aims to build Europe’s strongest conventional army in the coming years, reported Defense News.
The funding, endorsed by the Bundestag’s Budget Committee, marks another step in Berlin’s push to modernize its air force (Luftwaffe) and expand its defense capabilities amid rising geopolitical tensions in Europe.

Additional Defense Upgrades
Beyond the Eurofighter deal, lawmakers authorized funding for several other key projects. These include new Boxer armored vehicles for:
- training and medical missions
- development of air-droppable light combat vehicles
- a modern pontoon bridge system to support river-crossing operations.
Germany’s navy will also benefit from the budget approvals. It will receive new medium-range boats for maritime special forces and upgraded mine-hunting sonar systems, enhancing underwater threat detection and coastal defense capabilities.
These aircraft will feature advanced EScan radar systems, enhancing Germany’s electronic warfare and air defense abilities. The purchase reflects Germany’s goal to strengthen its conventional forces and replace older Tornado aircraft that have served for decades.

Strengthening European Defense
Germany’s latest spending spree demonstrates a broader strategic shift toward European rearmament and defense independence.
As NATO continues to adapt to evolving threats, Berlin’s procurement of advanced aircraft and equipment strengthens its position as a key player in continental security.
The move also supports the European aerospace sector, as the Eurofighter program is jointly developed by Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo, ensuring continued industrial collaboration across the continent.

Bottom line
Germany’s €7 billion defense investment marks a decisive step in modernizing its air and ground forces.
The new tranche-five Eurofighters will enhance the Luftwaffe’s combat readiness while supporting European defense manufacturing.
As deliveries begin in the next decade, Berlin’s long-term strategy to strengthen its military footprint appears firmly underway.
