NOIDA- The long-awaited Noida International Airport (DXN) in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, is on track to become operational by November 2025. This was confirmed following a high-level review by Uttar Pradesh Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi.’
With over 80% of construction work completed, the airport has been delayed multiple times. However, the construction activities are now entering their final stretch of development. It is being aimed to serve as a major aviation hub for northern India.
Noida Airports to Open in November
The airport was initially scheduled for completion by September 2024. Later, the airport’s timeline was pushed back due to delays in terminal building works and approvals. Targets were revised in April and June 2025. However, these timelines were also missed.
Officials now express confidence in the November deadline. Terminal construction is progressing steadily, and work on the runway and airside infrastructure has surpassed 90% completion. Minister Gupta emphasized that the project is no longer symbolic or politically seasonal.
The minister stated, “Unlike in previous administrations, the current government has ensured the airport goes beyond paper and enters real execution.” This momentum is largely driven by a renewed focus on infrastructure and aviation capacity in India’s most populous state.
Two-Phase Operational Rollout
According to Noida International Airport Ltd (NIAL), operations will begin in phases. Domestic and cargo flights are expected to commence around September 15, 2025. Full-scale international operations are targeted for November 2025.
However, critical approvals still remain pending. This includes an aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). These clearances are essential for the airport to receive commercial traffic.
A joint inspection by the DGCA, BCAS, and the Airports Authority of India was scheduled in May to assess overall preparedness.
The airport is situated around 75 km from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. The airport is within reach of cities like Noida (52 km), Agra (130 km), and Dadri (90 km).
It is expected to serve a vast catchment area in northern India. In its first phase, the airport aims to handle 12 million passengers annually, eventually scaling up to 70 million by 2040–2050.
Upon completion of all phases, it will become the fourth-largest airport in the world by area and passenger capacity.
This would make Uttar Pradesh the only Indian state with five international airports.
Facilities in Noida Airport
The airport will include a state-of-the-art Ground Transportation Center, integrating metro rail, bus terminals, taxi lanes, and private parking. One of the most ambitious elements is a planned high-speed rail link connecting Delhi and Varanasi, which will reduce the travel time between Delhi and the airport to just 21 minutes.
A major feature of the project is the development of a multimodal cargo hub in collaboration with Air India SATS. The facility will handle over 100,000 tons of cargo annually at launch, with plans to expand later.
Additionally, over 580 mature trees have been relocated, and an eight-acre forest buffer zone has been developed. The terminal architecture will incorporate features inspired by North Indian culture and heritage, focusing on natural light and energy efficiency.
Asia’s Largest Airport
The Noida International Airport cost a total investment of Rs 34,000 crore, with Rs 10,056 crore allocated for the first phase. The airport is being developed by Zurich Airport International AG. Zurich Airport International will operate under a 40-year concession agreement.
The facility is not just an aviation project but part of a plan to boost logistics, tourism, and industrial development in western Uttar Pradesh. As the deadline draws near, all eyes remain on the project’s final months of execution.
If completed as planned, the Noida International Airport will not only ease pressure on Delhi’s existing airport but also mark a significant shift in India’s airport capacity and regional connectivity.
