DUBAI- Air Kerala, the upcoming ultra-low-cost airline backed by UAE-based investors, has secured its International Air Transport Association (IATA) airline code.
The carrier announced on Friday, May 2, that it has received the two-letter code “KD,” marking another significant step toward its launch, Gulf News reported.
Air Kerala IATA Code- KD
The code “KD” will be finalised once the airline obtains its Air Operator Certificate (AOC), expected by the end of June.
“Getting a two-alphabet code is a privilege. We are very honoured by the allocation.”
Harish Kutty, CEO, Air Kerala
For Afi Ahmed, Dubai-based founder and Chairman of Air Kerala, the designation holds special meaning. “For us, ‘KD’ stands for ‘Kerala Dream.’
“While for non-Keralites, it could mean ‘Kerala to Dubai’ or ‘Kerala to Doha.’ This is another step towards making the Air Kerala dream come true,” Ahmed said.
The airline recently established its headquarters in Kochi, Kerala, opening a spacious 3-floor office complex near Aluva Metro station in Ernakulam on April 15.
Kerala Minister of Industries P. Rajeev inaugurated the facility, with several Members of Parliament and the Legislative Assembly in attendance.
The modern headquarters features training facilities and can accommodate over 200 aviation professionals working simultaneously.
Recruitments
The airline has already hired 69 employees, with plans to expand significantly.
“By closer to launch, we will have 200 employees. We are targeting 1,000 employees by the end of the year, and we hope to have seven aircraft by then as well.”
Afi Ahmed, Dubai-based founder & Chairman of Air Kerala
Kutty confirmed that essential staff, including pilots and cabin crew, have been recruited and are currently undergoing training in India. The airline’s inaugural flight will depart from Kochi International Airport (COK), though launch destinations remain unconfirmed.
Non-Resident Keralites
According to Ahmed, Air Kerala has generated significant interest among prospective UAE and GCC-based non-resident Keralites (NRKs). The airline aims to serve this substantial expatriate community with affordable travel options between Kerala and Gulf destinations.
Air Kerala joins several new airlines preparing to launch operations this year, including PIF-funded Riyadh Air (RX) from Saudi Arabia, which is also expected to begin flights later in 2025.

Air Kerala has announced a special contest offering three lucky winners the opportunity to join dignitaries on its historic inaugural flight.
