BOSTON- A Chicago-based carrier, United Airlines (UA) flight from Brussels (BRU) to Washington Dulles (IAD) diverted to Boston Logan Airport (BOS) amid a medical emergency on December 22, 2024.
According to the current schedule, United Airlines operates a daily flight between Washington and Brussels, Belgium.
United Flight Attendant Stroke
A Reddit user who was a passenger onboard the United flight UA951 reported the incident. The user wrote, ‘I’m on the plane. The French-speaking flight attendant (Brussels to Dulles) got ill partway through (no idea what) and the condition worsened badly enough that they had to be evacuated. We’re now refueling and a passenger is doing all the announcements in French.‘
Another passenger onboard the flight commented on the post and shared that, ‘I’m on this flight- the flight attendants in Polaris said he had a stroke. We are sitting on the ground at Boston Airport.’
According to FlightRadar24 data, a United Airlines flight took off from Brussels at 11:10 AM UTC. After being airborne for around seven hours, the flight attendant aware the cockpit crew of a possible stroke to one of the attendants.
Following this, the flight crew decided to divert to the nearby major airport. The flight landed safely at Boston Logan at 6:45 PM UTC. The aircraft taxied to an isolated place near Terminal E.
One user wrote, ‘Well if you have to divert someone for a medical emergency, Boston is the best place possible at least. BMC is probably closer via the TWT and while that’s a good hospital hopefully they went to Massachusetts General Hospital [MGH], (one of the best in the world).’
Some users prayed for the recovery and wellness of the crew, while some said that in such a situation having a quick medical response is key to saving lives.
Flight Reached its Destination with 2-Hour
The flight departed from Boston at 8:27 PM and landed at Washington Dulles at 9:39 PM UTC (4:39 PM local time).
The flight was operated by a 7.8-year-old Boeing 777-300ER registered as N2737U. The aircraft is configured with 350 seats including 60 United Polaris open-suite seats, 24 recliner-style United Premium Plus seats, and 266 Economy Class seats, of which 62 are Economy Plus seats with extra legroom.
However, the exact number of passengers onboard the aircraft is unknown.
What is Stroke and Why it Occur?
A stroke is like a heart attack for your brain—it happens when blood flow to a part of your brain is disrupted, either by a blocked blood vessel or bleeding in the brain. Strokes are a medical emergency, and getting help quickly is vital to prevent serious damage or even death.
To spot the signs of a stroke, remember BE FAST:
- B: Balance – Is there a sudden loss of balance or coordination?
- E: Eyes – Is there sudden vision loss or double vision in one or both eyes?
- F: Face – Ask the person to smile. Does one side of their face droop?
- A: Arms – Ask them to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
- S: Speech – Listen for slurred or confused speech. Are they struggling to find the right words?
- T: Time – Act fast! Call for help immediately and note when symptoms began to guide treatment.
Strokes are alarmingly common. They’re the second leading cause of death globally and the fifth in the United States. They’re also a major cause of disability worldwide, making awareness and quick action essential.
A similar medical emergency occurred the same day on Zurich (ZRH) to Chicago (ORD) flight UA12 as the pilot fell sick. Further, a flight attendant was seriously injured onboard the United flight UA3 from Chicago to Zurich.
