Istanbul Airport (IST) has established itself as a key center of air travel not only in Europe but also in the world. The airport is strategically positioned in Europe making it a connection hub to other parts of the world, connecting key cities of North America, Africa, and Asia hence making it a key choice for many passengers across the world as it links continents.
The combination of the airport’s beautiful architectural features, large terminals, and cutting-edge systems allows it to take care of all the processes from checking to boarding in the most efficient processes. Traveling through this hub makes it a traveler-friendly airport which indeed makes it one of the best in the world.
These strengths have empowered Istanbul Airport to surpass its counterparts London Heathrow and Schipol Amsterdam.
Busiest Airport in Europe
Eurocontrol in its recent reports has supported the view regarding the leadership position of Istanbul Airport in the European air traffic report.
The most satisfying aspect is that the airport was able to generate its 1352 flights average, making it the most active airport throughout all of Europe. It is great to note that the airport has an efficient performance in its operations and can meet the ever-increasing demand of its flights.
This undoubtedly highlights the remarkable management & planning of the affairs at the airport and its capacity to expand its traffic. Besides this, there’s an average flight delay of less than five minutes which says leaps and bounds about Istanbul Airport’s operational efficiency.
Unprecedented Growth
Turkish Airlines (TK), the chief operator of the airport is one of the significant factors when it comes to performance. Istanbul Airport is connected to approximately the whole world all thanks to Turkish Airlines which serves over 300 cities.
The emphasis placed on technology and efficiency throughout the airport has improved customer journey & experience. Turkish Airlines also substantiated this fact with a statistics report which covered the years 2019 to 2024 where there was an uplift of 23% in the number of airline passengers.
In the recent day’s data, the figures speak: From December 2 to December 8, 2024, the airport increased the number of flights made by 5% in comparison to the same dates in 2023.
Top European Airports in 2025 Q1
The latest data from Cirium Analytics as shared by Ralph Anker reveals that Istanbul Airport (IST) tops the list of European airports with the most non-stop destinations served during the first quarter of 2025. With at least 301 routes on offer, Istanbul IST represents a 5% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
Closely following Istanbul is Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport, which has grown its network to 250 destinations, a 15% jump year-over-year. The next two spots are held by Frankfurt Airport (-1% to 236 routes) and Amsterdam Schiphol (-1% to 229 routes).
While Istanbul and Paris have seen significant route expansion, several major hubs have experienced declines. London Heathrow (LHR), Europe’s busiest airport, now ranks 6th with 188 destinations (-2% vs 2024 Q1). Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and London Gatwick (LGW) have also seen reductions in their networks.
On the growth side, Munich Airport has impressively increased its non-stop routes by 18% to 184 destinations. This appears to be driven in part by seasonal services to Greek islands, though some routes may not start until 2025 Q2 despite being counted in the current data.
Other airports posting solid gains include Paris Orly (ORY, +13% to 130 routes), London Gatwick (+13% to 167 routes), and Istanbul’s secondary airport Sabiha Gokcen (SAW, +12% to 141 routes).
Bottom Line
Istanbul Airport is vigorously expanding its capacity, applying new technologies, and focusing on green options to reduce carbon emissions to reclaim its position recurrently.
Thus it continues to be Europe’s busiest air traffic hub, which leads modern aviation and determines the direction of the industry.
